Austin Hubbard wins Late Model thriller at Virginia Motor Speedway; Marshall, Jamerson and Folmar also visit victory lane

Jamaica, VA. --

In one of the most competitive Victory Lap Model events in some time, Austin Hubbard of Laurel, DE led flag to flag to pick up the victory at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway but the victory did not come easy.

Hubbard and Matt Morgan led the 24 car field to green. It took several restarts before Hubbard could to lay claim to leading the first lap. On lap 3 Sommey Lacey pressured Morgan for second. Lap 5 saw Walker Arthur dive under Tom Cohick for fourth. By la 7 Hubbard was working lapped traffic as Morgan and Lacey battled for second and Arthur and Cohick battled for fourth.

On lap 9 Arthur took third from Lacey and set out for Morgan. On lap 11 Arthur took second from Morgan as the two exited turn 4 in traffic. On lap 12 Cohick drove inside both Lacey and Morgan to take third. On lap 15 Hubbard held a ten car length advantage over Arthur by lap 17 the lead was only two car lengths and closing.

On lap 19 got inside Hubbard in turn 4 but Hubbard was able to hold on to the lead by inches.

From lap 19 to lap 29, with the fans on their feet, the duo raced side by side. On every lap Hubbard would ride the cushion with Arthur trying to work the inside. Each time they would come to the line with Hubbard holding on by inches. The battle for the lead would come to a halt on lap 30 when Arthur lost a left front tire in turn 2. On the restart Arthur pulled away from the field as the battle for second went three wide between Lacey, Morgan and Ben Bowie.

Hubbard went on to record his second win of the season.

“I have to thank Walker (Arthur) for driving me so clean; any other driver might have just put me in the wall. It is a lot of fun to race like that,” commented a Hubbard in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Sommey Lacey, Ben Bowie, Scott Adams and Neil McClanan. Kevin Atkins picked up the Thurston Spring Service dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his tenth place finish.

In other action Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg, PA nursed an ailing motor home to take the win in the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature. flmar also set a new division track record with a lap fo 17.029 seconds. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA took the lead on lap 6 and then held off Tim Shelton to take home the win and in the Budweiser Modified nightcap Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA used a mistake by Brian Dobie at the white flag to take the lead and the win. Marshall ran the final 20 laps of the feature with a broken right shock.

It was the survival of the fittest in the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature. Tom Humphries of Waynesboro, VA and Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC led the field to green with Bolac taking control out of turn 2 with Humphries and Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg, PA battling for second.

The top three cars began to pull away from the rest of the field with Bolac a comfortable five car length advantage over the duo of Folmar and Humphries. On lap 6 the races first caution came out for debris in turn 3.

On the restart Bolac rocketed to a five car length advantage over Fomar. By lap 10 the advantage was up to a full straight with Folmar showing heavy smoke out of the engine compartment. On lap 13 Bolac came up on slower traffic, that’s when things went bad for the leader. While working traffic Bolac ran into the flipping car of Brian Lawson who had made contact with John Snead in turn 3. During the caution Folmar’s car showed flames coming from the engine but it quickly went out and he was able to continue.

On the restart with the top two wounded, Bolac with a crushed front wing and Folmar, leaking oil the battle for the lead heated up as Folmar worked to the inside of Bolac in turn 4 taking the lead. On the races next circuit the races second and final caution flew for a blown engine by Humphries. On the restart Folmar, still smoking, pulled away from Bolac. On lap 15 Matt Stambaugh and Michael Talley battled for fifth with Talley taking the spot at the line.

On lap 20 with Folmar pulling away the battle was for third between Eric Keck and Talley. Folmar cruised the rest of the way to pick up his second victory as the oil pressure in his car went to zero. Rounding out the top five were Daren Bolac, Eric Keck, Michael Talley and Tyler Shipp. Brent Bordeaux picked up the Thurston Spring Service dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his ninth place finish.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Tony Wood of New Kent, VA and J.R. Guy of Mechanicsville, MD led the field to green with Wood leading the first circuit. On lap 5 Roger Jamerson drove it under Wood in turn 4 taking the lead by inches at the line.

On lap 8 Tim Shelton worked to get by Wood for second only to be denied the spot. On lap 9 Shelton and Wood went three wide with lapped car out of turn 2 as they continued to battle over second but caution would bring the battle to a halt.

On the restart Shelton dove under Wood in turn 1 to take the spot and set out to catch Jamerson. Several quick cautions closed the gap back to Jamerson’s bumper but Shelton was unable to take advantage and Jamerson cruised to the win. Rounding out the top five were Tim Shelton, Tony Wood, Todd Traylor and Kenny Moreland. Michael Hayes picked up the Thurston Spring Service dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his ninth place finish.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Bill Roberts of Mechanicsville, VA and Brian Dobie of Partlow, VA led the field to green with Dobie taking control out of turn 2 followed by Matt Marshall and Brandon Galloway.

On lap 3 Galloway brought out a caution with a spin in turn 1. On the restart Marshall looked to the inside of Dobie for the top spot. On lap 13 Mark Schools took third from Roberts. On lap 23 Marshall made another move to the inside of Dobie only to have his progress blocked as the races final caution flew.

On the restart Schools tried to take second from Marshall but Marshall was able to gather it back up and closed in on Dobie in turn 3. Entering turn 4 Dobie bobbled allowing Marshall to dive to the inside taking the lead at the white flag. Marshall was able to pull away as Dobie and Schools battled for second with Dobie spinning out of turn 4 coming to the checkers giving second to Schools. Marshall took home his third win of the season followed by Mark Schools, Paige Harrison, Gary Conner and Bill Roberts. Marshall also picked up the Thurston Spring Service dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his victory.
