Carlsen Continues to Struggle with the High Banks of Bristol Motor Speedway

Cornelius, NC. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:July 5, 2008

19 year-old Andrew Carlsen has now gone racing twice on the high banks of the "World's Fastest Half Mile", Bristol Motor Speedway, and twice the young driver has been one of the fastest cars in practice only to struggle terribly in the race.

Carlsen's weekend at Bristol started out on Thursday, July 3rd with a UARA-STARS Series Open Test and found him near the top of the leader board. Carlsen was fifth in the final session of the day and the Chase Pistone Inc. crew was pumped up heading into Saturday morning's practice session. The two practice sessions on Saturday again showed Carlsen atop the leader board, this time in fourth of the 36 cars in attendance, but trouble would soon find Carlsen.

Late in the final test session, Carlsen became the fifth series driver to encounter problems in practice as he ran over some debris and cut down his right front tire, sending him hard into the wall in turn four. The 131 MAIN, Hangers Cleaners, OldWestGunSmith.com team went straight to work as Carlsen pulled the car into the pits and found a lot of the suspension bent from the impact. The team, led by Chase Pistone, thrashed on the car to get it fixed and ready for qualifying.

As the cars lined up on pit road to qualify, the black number 98 was still sitting behind pit wall, but as it neared time for Carlsen to qualify the team pushed the car onto the grid. Despite not having any laps on the repaired suspension, Carlsen took to the track and qualified for the show in 18th position.

As the Bristol 150 got underway on Saturday evening, Carlsen seemed to have a strong car again, moving up through the field quickly as he raced up to 14th position. He was still on the move when his Ford Fusion had another tire problem and slammed the outside wall hard in turn two. Carlsen's impact with the wall this time damaged his car too much and the young racer's night was done; the team settled for a 24th place finish.

"It was a tough day. We worked hard all day and in the end all we've got to show for it is a badly torn up race car," said Carlsen. "In testing and in practice I had the best car I've ever had; now we're going to have to clip both ends of it and start over. I'm extremely disappointed."

Despite two hard shots to the outside wall at Bristol Motor Speedway, Carlsen was a little beat up from the impacts but able to walk away uninjured.

"I'm ok; it was two hard hits though. I just hope they don't bring these tires back to Bristol; these tires really hurt us tonight and there were a handful of other drivers who had some hard contact with the wall due to the tire issues."

Carlsen is now focusing on getting his car repaired as the series prepares to head back to Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, VA for race number nine of 16. For Carlsen, the trip back to Motor Mile has to be exciting as he grabbed his first top ten finish and his first Melling Select Performance Rookie of the Race Award there back in April.

"Motor Mile is a good track for me and this team. We had a great run there earlier in the year and I'm looking forward to going back; maybe we can leave there with something positive to talk about again."
