Cliff Daniels Scores Impressive Fourth-Place Finish At Bristol Motor Speedway

Cliff Daniels Scores Impressive Fourth-Place Finish At Bristol Motor Speedway
Virginia Native Strong In Second UARA-STARS Bristol Late Model Event

Smithfield, VA.

Bristol Motor Speedway - those three words are enough to inspire fear in any racecar driver.  Not the case for Late Model Stock driver Cliff Daniels.  He headed into “Thunder Valley,” as it is known, ready to take on the challenge that is the concrete ½-mile track in the UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Series.  It is a challenge he has taken on twice this year, most recently coming home fourth in the UARA-STARS Late Model Event.

“We’re really excited about taking two top-fives out of Bristol this year,” said Daniels.  “At the start of this race, to be honest, we were really off.  We worked so hard in practice to get a car that would stay consistent on the long runs and never even worked on short runs.  But at the beginning of the race, we had a bunch of short runs, and that didn’t work out for us.

“The setup that worked here in the Spring, didn’t necessarily work this time, so we had to make a lot of changes to the car in practice. We wanted to come here and win and I think we had a car that was good enough to win by the end of the race, but all things considered, our team had a solid performance.  We had two cars here, and we felt like Tiffany had a pretty good car here too.  She had the worst luck on Thursday and blew a motor, so she didn’t get any seat time on the track.  In practice on race day she was really looking good but had bad luck again, which was unfortunate.  Our team had to bounce back and forth between both cars and really did a great job to give both drivers competitive cars, which is something we’re proud of.”

Despite the obstacles that were thrown at the Charlie Daniels Racing team, they were able to pull together as a team in order to bring home the top-five finish and at the same time put on some impressive racing.

“In the race when we’re getting passed, it gets frustrating. On the restarts, they would get us on the outside, then we’d drop back three or four car lengths and the caution would come out.  Any time there was a longer run, the car would get better.  Then once it started cooling off, our car came to life.  At the end, we were able to pick up the spots that we lost earlier in the race.”

Daniels and his team have now competed in three UARA Series races and have earned the Melling Select Rookie of the Race award in all three races. Cliff and his team plan to take what they learned at both UARA Bristol events and carry that into future races.

“I feel like we learned a whole lot more this time because the car wasn’t as good as the first race here,” added Daniels.  “In that race, the stars aligned right.  We started 12th or 13th, and the car was just good.  We could pass cars whenever we needed to.  This time, we really had to learn the track and what to do with a car that wasn’t as good.  It’s amazing how much of a difference one foot on the track makes with the progressive banking.  We learned a lot more this race that we can put in our notebooks and can bring back here next Spring.”
