Mackey Wins Rusty Harpe Memorial 200

Asheboro, NC: --

BJ Mackey won the Second Annual Rusty Harpe Memorial Race, sponsored by Lewis and Daggett, Attorneys at Law, at Caraway Speedway, in Asheboro, NC on Wednesday night. The memorial race was started in 2007 by Chip Harpe to honor his son, Rusty Harpe, who was tragically killed in a farming accident early that year. Rusty drove the #71 Late Model Stock Car at Caraway.

Lewis and Daggett was set up at the front gate handing out Safe and Sober t-shirts to promote their program against drinking and driving, to the first 1,000 people in the stands. In addition, Protégé Mechanical Labor Solutions and Forsyth Technical College were passing out information and goodies. Rusty’s car was also on display. Kids were able to have some fun on the inflatable slides and bounce houses brought in by JumpInKids.

“On behalf of our Lewis and Daggett Team we are proud to be here with the Harpe family for a good night of racing and family fun,” said David Daggett, partner at Lewis and Daggett, during the event.

The night’s main event was a 200 lap LMSC race, preceded by a 30 lap Limited Late Model Race and followed by a 100 lap Late Model Super Truck race and a 15 lap Mini Stock race.

Jason York in the #18 car took the pole award with a qualifying time of 17.077. Davin Scites was close behind with a time of 17.085. BJ Mackey in the #8 car qualified third but was forced to start 29th in the 32 car field, after a pre-race infraction was found.

The top six drivers drew for starting positions making the top six Scites, RA Brown, Brad Brinkley, Kris Bowen, Randy Burnett and York. The lead cars got off to a quick start by passing the back of the pack on lap 20.

Lap 59 brought out the second caution and the first red flag of the evening. Bowen was coming out of turn four when he hit a slick spot on the track. While trying to hold on to the car he popped his shoulder out of socket. His car went into the wall.

With nowhere to go, Brent Raymor and Ryan Wilson went into Bowen. The fuel cell was damaged by one of the impacts, causing it to explode, engulfing Bowen’s #80 car in flames. Bowen was able to get out quickly without any additional injuries.

Justin Johnson’s car also got caught up in the action. All four cars were done for the night.

When the restart came, York was up front followed by Scites, Andy Loden, Brinkley and Owen Kelly. Mackey had already made his way through the field and restarted eighth.

York was leading at lap 71 to win the $1,000 prize presented by Kevin Powell’s Foothills Ford in Pilot Mtn.

There was a mandatory caution at lap 100. Crews had 15 minutes to make any necessary adjustments. When the green flag waved to start the second half of the race, York was still in the lead followed closely by Scites, Mackey, Loden and Brinkley.

On lap 110 York got loose and almost hit the wall. Mackey made the pass to second. Scites is pulled ahead of the field until his car went out on lap 145. Mackey moves up to first and held his position for the remainder of the race. Randy Benson, York, Frank Deiny Jr. and Tommy Lemons rounded out the top five.

At the finish line, surrounded by family and friends, an emotional Mackey said “The whole race is emotional and motivational. Me and Rusty were good buddies. I was bound and determined we were going to come up here and run, regardless of what happened.” Mackey will be running on Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway in the UARA series.

“I am very thankful for all the drivers, sponsors and fans that came out to the race,” said Chip. “It means so much to me and the rest of the family that so many people care about Rusty and about us. Congratulations to BJ for winning the Late Model race and to all the winners of the other races.”
