Fierce Limited Sportsman rivalry could steal headlines during Bailey’s Late Model 200 Thursday at SoBo

South Boston, VA. --

A 200-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division and an annual fireworks extravaganza are the featured attractions of the Bailey’s Late Model 200 Thursday, July 3, at South Boston Speedway.

Even so, the highly anticipated 100-lap clash in the Limited Sportsman Division could wind up captivating fans and swiping area headlines, as a fierce battle for dominance between two talented drivers will continue on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

The first of three big-money NASCAR Whelen All-American Series races Thursday at America’s Hometown Track will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

In the Limited Sportsman Division, a heated rivalry between four-time winner Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C. and two-time defending division champion Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va., who has won twice in 2008, will resume.

The rivalry heightened on Sunday, June 15, when the two waged a fierce battle for victory over the final four laps of the day’s second 50-lap race for the division. The race ended with both cars damaged following a last-lap, front stretch crash. Each driver pointed blame for the incident at the other.

As fans cheered and jeered from the grandstands, an obviously angered Anderson had to be restrained by NASCAR officials in turn one as he charged towards Pulliam’s ride, which won the race by mere inches.

When the dust settled, Pulliam left following the June 15 action with a 17-point cushion over Anderson in the chase for the division championship and a warning to Anderson that he was not backing down from his challenge to unseat the defending champion. Anderson, too, warned that there was plenty racing left in the 2008 campaign and he would stand firm in his bid to claim a third straight division crown.

One week later, Anderson motored to Victory Lane, while Pulliam, who was involved in a late-race crash settled for a ninth-place showing, which boosted Anderson back atop the division standings by a mere four points.

On Thursday night for the Bailey’s Late Model 200, the race for supremacy will continue with much hype among the drivers, their crews and their multitudes of fans.

In the 200-lap Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division clash, Justin Johnson will enter as a three-time winner in 2008 and as the owner of the points lead in the division. Johnson is currently 17 points ahead of Wayne Ramsey, a two-time winner in 2008. Jonathan Bailey is third in the standings and leads fourth-place Dude Gibbs, a one-time winner this season, by only one point.

Many of the area’s top Late Model Stock Car teams are expected to be on hand Thursday for the Bailey’s Late Model 200 to compete for the $5,000 first-place check. Some of which include Peyton Sellers, Frank Deiny, Jr., Philip Morris, and many more.

Rounding out the exciting night of racing action will be a 50-lap event for the competitors in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division. Joe Allred owns the lead in the division’s title chase and is pursued by second-place Justin Tucker and Courtney Crosby, who owns the third spot in the standings.

Prior to Thursday night’s racing action, fans will be able to go trackside to meet and greet their favorite competitors during a fan appreciation session from 5:45 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

At the close of Thursday’s racing action, South Boston Speedway will stage its annual fireworks extravaganza in celebration of the July 4th holiday. The fireworks show is always one of the most impressive in the region.

Pit gates will open Thursday at 1 p.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get the green flag at 4:45 p.m.

Advance tickets for adults are available at a cost of $15 until Wednesday, July 2nd at 5 p.m. Adult admission on the day of the race will be $20. Children, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $10 and children, ages six and under, will be admitted free. Youth discounts are only valid if accompanied by a paying adult.

The rain date for the Bailey’s Late Model 200 will be Friday, July 4.
