NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Thursday, June 26, 2008

A 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature and one of the richest INEX Legends races in track history top the bill this Saturday, June 28, as Langley Speedway continues its 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule with Old Point National Bank Night at the Races.

Saturday's feature lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars (100 laps); Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (40 laps); E-Z Auto of Newport News UCARs (25 laps); Standard Welding Pro 6s (30 laps); and, the Virginia Mini Cup Racing Association (25 laps).

Gates open at 1 p.m. with practice rounds running from 2 'til 4. Time trials get under way at 4:30, immediately after the 4:15 drivers meeting. Pre-race activities begin at 6:55, while the Mini Cup class leads off the evening's feature slate shortly after 7.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

This week's INEX Legends 40-lapper boasts a purse of over $4,000, with the winner pocketing $2,000. The race is being presented by CBX Modular Homes, Cycle Specialists, Mike's Place and Elizabeth River Lawn & Landscaping. Also, the Freemans of Poquoson, Va., have posted a $200 award for the pole winner.

In preparation for Saturday's event, the track will host a Legends-only practice session on Friday, June 27, starting at 5 p.m. Pit admission is $10.

• • •

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly "test and tune" session this evening. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6. Pit admission is $10. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.

• • •

The Speedway's "Wild Wacky Wednesdays" participants will enjoy a night off on July 2. The track won't be silent, however. The weekly "test and tune" session for the stock car contingent will be moved up to Wednesday as drivers get ready for the next evening's special, Thursday night program. The regular Wednesday night show will resume on July 9.

• • •

As noted above, Langley Speedway will get a head start on the Independence Day holiday when the track hosts Miss Utility Night at the Races on Thursday, July 3.

That evening's lineup features: Super 8 Motels/B&B Engines Grand Stocks in a 75-lapper, B&C Seafood Modifieds, Bass Pro Shops Super Streets, E-Z Auto of Newport News UCARs, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks and Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).

In addition to the on-track action, fans will be treated to the always-highly-anticipated fireworks spectacular.

The $40,000+ Hampton Heat 200 Late Model Stock Car race is set for Saturday, July 12. The event is part of the City of Hampton's quadricentennial celebration, which culminates in 2010.

• Activities get under way on Thursday, July 10, with registration and pit parking from 12 noon 'til 5 p.m. The track holds its regular "test and tune" session at 6.

• On Friday, July 11, LMSC tech inspections begin at 9:30 a.m. Cars hit the track for practice at 2:30 p.m., finishing up at 4:45. Time trials, to determine positions 1-20, are slated for 7, followed by heat races to determine positions 21-28. Grandstand tickets for Friday are $5. Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

• On Saturday, July 12, gates open at 11 a.m. with practice starting at 2 p.m. The Gator Almond Band performs from 5:30-6:30. A "Last Chance" race fills positions 29 and 30 for the LMSC feature. Up to four provisional starters will then be added to round out the 34-car lineup for the $15,000-to-win Hampton Heat 200.

In addition to the big LMSC headliner, the Med Express Super Trucks, E-Z Auto of Newport News UCARs, Standard Welding Pro 6s and Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts are slated for action.

Regular ticket prices will prevail for the July 12 program - $10 for adults, etc. Special commemorative tickets may be purchased in advance at the Speedway office.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
