Carlsen Struggles In route to a 17th Place Finish at Coastal Plains Raceway

Cornelius, NC. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 21, 2008

UARA-STARS Division

Andrew Carlsen, No. 98

Andrew Carlsen had a great car at Coastal Plains Raceway for the seventh stop on the UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Car tour, but the third to qualify draw and a dirty track during qualifying played a huge role in his 17th place showing on the 4/10 mile speedplant.

His practice times were good enough to put him inside the top ten in ninth place and the entire 131 MAIN Restaurant, Hangers Cleaners, OldWestGunSmith.com team was excited about the night ahead. Their excitement was quickly dampened as Carlsen went out to qualify. Carlsen found the track dirty after several blown engines and problems during practice for the local divisions, and so the young driver skated around the 4/10 mile oval, struggling to qualify, managing only a 15th place starting position in the SiteMaxx 150.

At the drop of the green flag Carlsen was ready to compete with the other 29 UARA-STARS competitors and was running strong and steady as the race headed into its opening laps, but trouble loomed right around the corner. Carlsen was racing with another top fifteen competitor and was forced up into the wall, ripping his right front fender loose. The fender then began lifting as air got underneath it and worked as an air brake for his fast racer, taking grip from his front tires and dropping him back through the field slowly.

Things went from bad to worse as another driver got together with him and the loose fender began to flap, forcing UARA-STARS officials to black flag Carlsen and send him down pit road for repairs.

"It was an extremely tough race for us tonight, it seemed we just couldn't stay out of the wall and we had plenty of help with that. I am grateful because it could have been worse, we could have been hit a lot harder on either one of those incidents," said Carlsen following the race.

In the end for Carlsen it was a 17th place finish, but after a night of "racing" incidents the final outcome could have been a lot worse for the 19 year-old Central Piedmont Community College Freshman.

"I'll take that finish. It isn't what we're capable of, but that's the way racing is. We took a big hit in the points this week, but we've got a top notch team and we'll be back in the thick of things at Bristol."

Carlsen is certainly excited about making the trip back to Bristol Motor Speedway for his second appearance there and there is no question that his 25th place wasn't indicative of how good his car was. Carlsen had one of the fastest cars at Bristol and expects nothing less when the tour rolls back into the 1/2 mile super speedway of short tracks on Saturday, July 5th.

"I can't wait to get back up there to Bristol, this time we've got a full day of practice before the race and we're going to be even better and this time hopefully all the mechanical issues won't get in our way of a top ten finish and that Rookie of the Race award," said an excited Carlsen about the return to Bristol Motor Speedway.
