"The Ghost" Turns Ross Furr's Luck Around at Coastal Plains Raceway
Jun 24, 2008 - updated Jun 24th, 2008 10:22pm

Concord, NC. --

Coming into Saturday night's SiteMaxx 150 at Coastal Plains Raceway, Ross Furr and his Ross Furr Racing team had little to be excited about after being taken out of contention for top ten finishes in the last five races and knocking him out of position to try and defend his 2007 UARA-STARS championship.

Winning the season opener at Concord Motorsport Park back on March 29th was the only highlight in a season full of cellar lows for the defending champion in the UARA-STARS National Touring Series for Late Model Stock Cars. In race number two of the 2008 season Furr found himself tangled up on a late restart with another top ten competitor garnering himself a 23rd place finish, his worst in more than 18 previous UARA-STARS tour races. Races three, four, five and six didn't go any better for Furr, but despite the troubles the team continued to dig and finally after a simple change at Coastal Plains Raceway the team dug themselves out of a deep hole.

The simple change for Furr was to bring out last years championship winning car and shed the "Darth Vader" colors(black) for his traditional primarily white paint scheme now know at the track as "The Ghost". "The Ghost" is a much older chassis than the brand new one Furr has been running and "The Ghost" helped propel Furr inside the top five on the practice sheets for the first time since the season opener at Concord.

Furr's impressive practice runs put a little extra bounce in the step of the entire team and maybe even allowed Furr himself to smile a little. The team's excitement was crushed when his qualifying times went down in the books and left them to start 16th in the 30-car field.

"We were awesome in practice, in the top five for the first time in a while and I just didn't get the qualifying run that we needed to be in a position to race well into the top ten or maybe even the top five," said Furr following qualifying.

The green flag dropped for the 150-lap race and Furr's car was on a rail racing through the field easily and putting himself inside the top ten early. Furr was soon involved in a minor incident that ripped some of the sheet metal from his car, but allowed him to continue despite getting shoved around under caution by another competitor. Furr restarted at the tail of the field and surged his way through the field and in the end found his way to a seventh place finish, his second best finish of the season and best in the last six races.

"I don't know what happened in front of us to get us in that wreck, but it didn't hurt the performance of the car. This old car is a tank, it's takes a beatin' and keeps on gettin' it. We had a top three car, I just hate we weren't able to show it tonight, but we're back!"

Furr definitely served notice that "he's back" and as the UARA-STARS tour rolls back into Bristol Motor Speedway for race number eight of the 16 race schedule, it couldn't come at a better time. "We needed this. This team has been hurting this season from the on track performances to off track stuff, we've been hit hard, but it feels good to get a top ten and we're looking to keep this momentum going at Bristol."
