Alex Yontz Comes Home with Runner-Up Spot at Coastal Plains

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:June 23, 2008

Season Is Back on Track for UARA-STARS Series Regular

When you are trying to get out of a slump, sometimes breaking out something old and familiar can be the right call. Alex Yontz was looking for a good run, and he brought his oldest car to Coastal Plains Speedway (NC) this past weekend in search of a good finish. Old faithful came through, and Yontz scored a second-place finish in the UARA-STARS event, his third top-five finish of the season.

“We finished the race, and that was a big up for us,” said Yontz. “The least few races have just have been awful for us. To just get things turned around is good for us. We had to bring out our older car, but this is old trusty. We won at Martinsville with this car, so it has always been special to me.”

Yontz had some superstitions about his night after he qualified sixth for the fourth time this season. The way Yontz had found bad luck in the last few UARA events, this didn’t sit well with the driver, even if he was in his favorite ride.

“We were second in practice, which was good,” said Yontz. “We timed in sixth, and we have been sixth after qualifying like four times this year. We were starting to wonder if we could make it through the night.”

However, things would turn out okay for Yontz. The first 50 laps were very intense with lots of action. The entire field knew that rain was nearby and that the race could be shortened at any point after halfway. The rain never came, and the 100-lap race would go the distance.

“After the 50-lap mark, things started to settle down,” added Yontz. “We ran fifth or sixth, and we never did fall much farther than that. We started to work our way up, and we kept our nose clean. Things were just going our way, and if a guy would move up the track in front of us, we would stick our nose in there and move up a spot.”

As the laps wound down, Yontz was in the top five when the leaders tangled. One went for a spin, while the other went to the rear for his role in the incident. This allowed Yontz to move into second place with only a handful of laps to go.

“The leader got spun, and that put us in second behind Jake Crum,” added Yontz. “We kept having cautions, and we needed a good ten-lap run to get our car going, but the cautions came and we had a green-white-checkered finish and ended up second.”

The finish comes as the UARA-Stars take two weeks off before going back to Bristol Motor Speedway (TN) on July 5th. Yontz looks to add another win to his resume from the high banks of Bristol. He won there last year and finished second in the spring race.
