South Boston Speedway News
Pulliam, Anderson will renew battle for Limited Sportsman crown Saturday at SoBo

South Boston, VA. --

The featured attraction of the VALPAK 150 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race program Saturday at South Boston Speedway will be a 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division. Many fans, however, will be focused on the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race, which will also take place at America's Hometown Track.

The first of six races that will make up the VALPAK 150 will get underway at 7 p.m.

The Limited Sportsman Division championship chase has been exciting in the early stages of the season. Four-time winner Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C., who is in his sophomore season of competition at South Boston Speedway, is attempting to end the two-year championship reign of South Boston, Va. driver Bruce Anderson, who owns one victory at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval this season.

Heading into this weekend's 50-lap race, Pulliam owns a 17-point edge over Anderson in the championship chase. His two victories last weekend enabled him to stretch his cushion slightly. Anderson posted finishes of second and third last weekend.

The rivalry between Pulliam and Anderson heightened last Sunday in the closing laps of the second 50-lap race. The two raced side-by-side over the final four laps of the race with each making contact with the other driver. As the two came out of turn four on the final circuit of the race, the cars collided and came across the start-finish line in a dead heat. Pulliam was ruled to have won the race by mere inches.

Tempers flared after the race as both drivers surveyed heavily damaged cars. Pulliam and Anderson kept those post-race comments clean, however, each stressed that, "It's a long season." The two both said they would have their cars ready for this weekend's race and both added that their goals would continue to be winning races and pursuing a championship.

In the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division, Justin Johnson of Durham, N.C., a two-time winner in the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car ranks in 2008 at America's Hometown Track, currently leads the division's point standings. Johnson owns a four-point edge over two-time winner Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va.

Jonathan Bailey of Keysville, Va. is third in the standings and is 11 points ahead of fourth-place Dude Gibbs of Seaford, Va., a one-time winner this season. C.E. Falk sits fifth in the standings and is just five points behind Gibbs.

Other Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division winners in 2008 at South Boston Speedway include Jonathan Cash, who has won twice, and Dude Gibbs, who has notched one triumph.

The Budweiser Pure Stock Division drivers will compete in twin 30-lap races Saturday. Joe Allred owns the division point lead. He is 14 points ahead of Justin Tucker.

Rounding out the VALPAK 150 race program will be events for the Yellow Book USA Southern Vintage Modified Division and the INEX Legends Cars Series.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 1 p.m. with practice for all divisions beginning at 2:15 p.m. and continuing through 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get started at 5:15 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 and children, ages 6 and under, will be admitted free. All youth must be accompanied by a paying adult to receive discounted admission.
