June 14th Orange County Speedway Results

Rougemont, NC. --

Stacy Puryear declared an intention to compete for Orange County Speedway’s Late Model Stock Car championship and took a big step toward it with a 150-lap victory last Saturday night in the Talbert Building Supply 305.

South Boston resident Puryear led every lap and took the lead in the track’s TAG-OUT Late Model Stock Car standings. He withstood two lengthy challenges from runner-up David Blankenship Jr. of Timberlake, NC. Defending track champion Terry Dease of Oxford, NC, emerged from a four-way battle for third place that ended with a wreck. “I want to win races and get this championship so bad,” Puryear told a crowd estimated at 4200. “This race was really won on Thursday when my crew spent hours and hours testing, trying to get the car the best it could be.”

Puryear led qualifying with a lap at 14.381 seconds (94.05 miles an hour) on the steeply-banked three-eighths mile asphalt track. He started second after a drawing among the six fastest qualifiers and overtook pole starter Craig Moore after half a lap. Triplett said he was racing an older car for the first time in more than a year. He got underneath Puryear several times in the track’s South turn “but could not seal the deal. Stacy had just a little better car than I did. I had an old worn-out engine in my car and Stacy was just better getting off the corner.” Moore mounted a similar challenge to Puryear for several laps early before his engine had a valve failure at lap 35. “I don’t think I could have passed him any way,” said a dejected Moore. “He’s racing a crate motor and just killing everybody down the straightaway with it.”

Puryear said it was the 30th victory of his Late Model Stock Car career. “I’ve won about everything but a championship,” he said. “I’ve been racing for 21 years and struggled to get up front. I’m really serious about winning the Orange County title.” Dease said he had been patiently following third-running Leigh Caruthers most of the race before the two collided in the 125th lap. Dease drove away as Caruthers shot across the track and into fifth-running Ronald Hill.

“I feel real badly for Ronald Hill, because it ruined a top-five night for him,” said Dease. “It was a wreck that should not have happened and I’ll leave it at that.” Justin Snow charged past early leader Jerry Hinesley in the 11th lap and led the rest of the way in a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race. Snow was disqualified from a second place finish here the previous week for violating a carburetor rule. “My crew went back to the drawing board and they nailed it,” said Snow, a Danville, Va, resident. “My car is going through the turns better than ever.”

Runner-up Tripp Massengill of Creedmoor, a Limited Sportsman rookie, took the lead in standings away from Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill, NC. Carver was involved in two wrecks and managed an eighth-place place finish.

Eddie Capps of Sutherlin, Va., won a 35-lap race for the Trailers of the East Coast Grand Stock division. Corey Purnell of Yanceyville finished third and kept his points lead. Keith Langston of Pittsboro, NC, padded his lead in Pure Stock standings with a 20-lap victory. Darrell Gwyn finished first in a 25-lap combined race for Southern Ground Pounders vintage Modified, Sportsman and Limited Modified cars. Gwyn’s 1972 Chevrolet Vega was scored the Modified division winner as he held off a spirited effort from runner-up Gary Lloyd, who won the Sportsman class in a 1965 Ford Falcon.

Racing returns to Orange County Speedway June 28 with a program that includes 150 laps of TAG-OUT Late Models, plus 75-lap races for Limited Sportsman and the visiting Allison Legacy Series.
