– Trevor Sanborn, longing for the 50-degree weather he left back home in Maine, withstood sizzling heat in his first Pro All Stars Super Late Model victory last Saturday night in the Orange Blossom Special PASS event at Orange County Speedway.
“I just wanted it real bad and toughed it out,” said Sanborn, who resides at Parsonfield, Maine. He said his team left behind a blower and other cooling devices for the winning car. “It was 52 degrees when we left the house. Nobody thought about that stuff. It was like an oven in the car, but it was definitely worth it!”

Taking advantage of the PASS South series’ double-file restarts, Sanborn swapped the lead three times in the 150-lap race with eventual runner-up Jason Hogan of Cleveland, Ga. “I was real fortunate to have the outside lane on that last restart (at lap 122),” said Sanborn. “I was praying there wouldn’t be any more cautions.”

Hogan admitted he struggled with temperatures that soared into the upper 90’s. “The heat was a real killer for all of us,” he said. “I turned on a fan in my car and came back to life so to speak. One more caution flag and it might have been a different story.”
Home state driver Jeff Fultz of Goldsboro pleased the crowd by finishing third in his first time in a high performance Late Model here. “I was trying to conserve my tires and just got too far back there,” he said.”
Ben Rowe of Turner, ME, recovered from a pit stop and took fourth. Fastest qualifier John Stancill of Ayden, NC, struggled to fifth place with a misfiring engine.

Thirteen-year-old Logan Ruffin got the pole position in a drawing and ran fourth most of the way. He was sidelined by an electrical problem and finished 18th in a field of 28 teams from 11 states.
Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va., took his second Orange County victory of the year in a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race. He qualified second and led every lap. Anderson watched a left rear tire go flat in victory ceremonies.
Fastest qualifier Brian Cole, the track’s 2007 Limited Sportsman division champion, inherited second place when officials disqualified Justin Snow for violating a carburetor rule. Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill, NC, finished fourth and kept the lead in standings.
Brent Evans of Stem, NC, took his first 2008 victory in the Trailers of the East Coast Grand Stock division. Michael Hatley of Chapel Hill was disqualified from second place for accosting an official after the 35-lap race. Cory Purnell of Yanceyville, NC, finished second and took the lead in division standings from Ray Ellington, who finished fourth.

Hurdle Mills resident Bruce “Squirrelly” Chisholm was winner of a 20-lap Pure Stock race.
Racing continues here Saturday night, June 14, with 150 laps for the track’s TAG-OUT Late Model Stock Car division as main event of a six-event program.
