Team Crum Racing

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May31, 2008

Dillon, S.C.

Jake “The Snake” Crum was bitten by bad luck at Bristol Motor Speedway a couple of weeks ago, but things turned around in a big way this weekend at Dillon Speedway. Jake won the Wallace Industrial Technologies 150, which was the 100th race in the UARA-Stars Late Model Series on Saturday night.

“I didn’t know that, that’s pretty cool,” commented the winner after finding out it was the 100th race in the series. “I really want to thank everyone that’s helped me, my crew, my parents, my sponsors, Fatz Café and Dana Shriver with Made in Multiples. Just everyone that helped me get here.”

The day started out with Jake running in the top seven in the practice sessions earlier in the day and posted the quickest time in the second session. When he went out for qualifying, he laid down a blistering lap which put him on the top of the charts. He held on to the pole position for awhile, but Richard Boswell posted the quickest lap of the day, leaving Jake to start on the outside of the front row, in the second position.

“I really thought we had the pole spot,” the 16 year-old driver commented. “That’s alright though. We have a great car and we’ll get out front.”

It had been a toasty day at the track and after an autograph session with the fans and a couple of local races, it was time for the UARA-Stars to show their stuff. Jake wasted no time and immediately took the lead once the green flag dropped. He led the first 65 laps of the race and led a total of 85 laps that night.

“This car is so awesome,” screamed the driver of the No. 1 Fatz Café / Made in Multiples Chevy. “I’m just cruising.”

The first caution of the night came out on Lap 35 when a four-car pileup occurred in front of Jake, but he cleared the wreckage and moved on. After running in thick lapped traffic, the car seemed to be running a little hot, but nothing a couple of caution laps couldn’t take care of. The only other concern was a slight tight condition, which Jake thought he could fix by changing his line on the track.

“The car should be cooling down now that we’re out of that lapped traffic,” coached Crew Chief, Nick Hutchins. “Just keep an eye on the temperature, but we should be just fine.”

Jake had a little trouble on the restart after he spun his tires. He quickly regrouped and took off, only to be interrupted by a spin in Turn 2 that resulted in the first of two red flags of the night. They finally get back underway and he continued to lead until lap 67 when BJ Mackey caught Jake and passed him for the lead.

Mackey and Jake were the dominant forces in the field. They quickly began lapping cars on the second long green flag run of the night. Jake had a slip-up when the car came out from under him and he goes completely sideways around lap 95. He saves the car and gathers it back up to keep his second place position.

“I’m good, I’m good,” was the only comment mentioned on the radio after the near-miss.

With the race coming to the final stages, Jake was running down the leader when Mackey experienced some mechanical issues. This allowed Jake to take back the lead with just 11 laps to go. Just as Jake was on a roll to take his first victory of the 2008 season, a huge wreck piled up just as Jake was entering Turn 4. Jake just barely slithered through the carnage of wrecked cars.

“What was that all about?” Jake commented on the radio. Once again the field is parked under a red flag while they cleaned up the wreckage, leaving Jake smoking hot inside his racecar. “It is so hot in here,” Jake exclaims on the radio. “I’ve been out of water since lap 30.”

After some words of wisdom and encouragement from his crew, the field is finally set for the green-white-checkered finish. The green flag dropped and Jake made the restart of his life bringing home the victory. He nearly slapped the wall doing burnouts on the frontstretch during his victory lap.

“Was I that close to it?” Jake asked when he was told how close he was to the wall. “Not to worry, I had it under control.”

“We needed this win, I am so proud of this team,” the young Statesville, NC Hotshoe commented. “I was getting really hot there on that red flag, but knew I had to focus on getting this win.”

Next up for Jake and Team Crum Racing is the Bad Boy 150 at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 14, 2008 in Hickory, NC.
