Virginia Motor Speedway News
Meyers gets fifth win of season in first ever appearance to Virginia Motor Speedway
May 25, 2008 - updated May 25th, 2008 11:22am
Web posted by

Jamaica, VA. --

The first ever appearance by the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, VA was everything it was billed to be and more as Clovis, CA Jason Meyers held off Daryn Pittman of Owasso, OK to pick up his fifth win in eleven races driving his Elite Racing #14 GLR Investments, Elite Landscaping, Primerica Financial, Charlie Garrett powered KPC.

Meyers looked untouchable from the drop of the green flag as here rocketed to the lead from his outside front row starting position to lead the first lap. As Meyers pulled away the battle for second on battle heated up. On lap 7 the races only caution came out for Tony Bruce Jr. who made heavy contact with the turn 2 wall. On the restart Joey Saldana rocketed to the outside of Sam Hefertepe Jr. to take over the third spot. Hefertepe battle back as the two raced side by side, swapping the position back and forth over the next seven laps.

On lap 16 Meyers and Pittman began working heavy traffic. Pittman got to the inside of Meyers out of turn four taking the lead at the line. Pittman’s stay at the top was short lived as Meyers wrestled the lead away on lap 18.

Pittman kept applying the pressure, looking for a way around the very fast Myers as they worked lapped traffic. Meyers was up to the task as he held off Pittman to record his fifth win of the season and extending his current point lead.

“What an exciting race, this facility is just awesome and the track was perfect. I was better with an open track; I struggled a bit when we were in traffic. We have worked awful hard to get to this point, and getting another win tonight and extending our point lead gets us heading in the right direction, towards a championship,” commented Meyers in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Daryn Pittman, Sam Hefertepe Jr., Jac Haudenschild and Joey Saldana.

In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 feature it was Anthony Kincaid of Hayes, VA and defending champion Austin Hubbard of Laurel, DE led with field to green with Hubbard powering around the outside to lead the first lap. That left Kincaid to deal with current point leader Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD for the second spot.

A couple of quick cautions closed the field on the back of Hubbard for the restart. On lap 4 Walker Arthur worked inside Long in turn 3 taking third in the process. Hubbard held a car length advantage over Kincaid and Arthur as the trio began to work traffic. On lap 9 Kincaid began to apply pressure for the lead as the two diced through traffic.

On lap 11 Long and Tom Cohick battled for fourth as Arthur looked inside Kincaid for second. Arthur finally took over the second spot on lap 13. The races third an final caution came out for a spinning Dave Savage in turn 4 and nearly took out the leader as Hubbard was able to avoid making contact and was placed back in his spot as the leader.

On the restart Hubbard and Arthur pulled away from the field as Ronald Cusic, Donnie Marshall Jr. and Stephen Evans raced three wide for seventh. By lap 19 Arthur began applying more pressure for the lead, using every inch of the race track to find a way around Hubbard.

Arthur was able to get the nose of his car under Hubbard but could never make the pass. With six laps to go the leaders began working heavy traffic. On lap 30 Hubbard stumbled in turn 2 allowing Arthur to get to his inside as the two raced side by side into turn 3.

Every move Arthur made it seemed as if Hubbard had an answer as he was able to hold off Arthur for the victory by a margin of .511 seconds. With the victory Hubbard became the fourth different winner in as many races.

Rounding out the top five were Walker Arthur, Stevie Long, Anthony Kincaid and Tom Cohick. Tony Buckler picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the race Award with a thirteenth place finish.
