NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action continues at Langley Speedway this Saturday, May 24, when the track plays host to Tidewater Tech Night. Five races make up the Memorial Day weekend feature slate.

Saturday's lineup includes: B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Bass Pro Shops Super Streets (50 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Trucks (25 laps); Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (25 laps); and, E-Z Auto of Newport News UCARs (25 laps).

Gates open at 1 p.m., while afternoon practice runs from 2 'til 4. A drivers meeting is scheduled for 4:15, followed by qualifying at 4:30. Pre-race ceremonies start at 6:55 and the first feature race goes green at 7.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly "test and tune" session on Thursday, May 22. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.

Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.

Randy Akers will be gunning for his third straight checkered flag in this weekend's Super Street 50-lapper. To bag that prize, though, he'll have to overcome a less-than-ideal starting position. By track rules, a winner of two consecutive races may start the next event from no better than the outside of Row 4.

Three races into the season, Akers ranks third in the current Super Street standings. With 134 points, he trails co-leaders Randy Sample and Jessica Wood by four.

In addition to his two victories, Akers' record also shows a ninth-place outing in the season opener - the result of a spin off the final corner, while challenging Sample for the lead.

Langley Speedway's offices will be closed on Monday, May 26, for the Memorial Day holiday. Business activities will resume on Tuesday, the 27th, at 9 a.m.

The Speedway's "Wild Wacky Wednesdays" program continues on May 28. The popular mid-week event features street cars in 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track), "Time Attacks" (solo runs against the clock) and burnout contests.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

A big, six-race card is on tap for Saturday, May 31, as NASCAR action resumes at Langley Speedway with Larry King, Professional Legal Services Night.

That evening's lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars, Super 8 Motels/B&B Engines Grand Stocks, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks, Standard Welding Pro 6s and a 75-lapper for the Rolling Thunder Modified tour.
