FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:(May 19, 2008)
Team Crum Racing had a new sponsor on their car at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Fatz Café joined the team for the weekend, but it wasn’t quite the night that Jake “The Snake” Crum had hoped for. It was a frantic start to the Thompson Metal 150 when the team experienced radio problems. A bad alternator then caused Jake to lose power halfway through the race, while running in third. Jake would finish the race in the 22nd position.
“That is not the finish we had in mind, especially with a new sponsor on the car this week” commented the driver of the No.1 Fatz Café Chevy. “I’m really proud of my team, though. They worked hard to get me back out on the track. A lot of cars dropped out of the race tonight but we were at least able to finish; just not anywhere near where we wanted.”
The day started out good as Jake ran in the top ten during the practice session all afternoon. There were over 50 cars attempting to make the 32 car field and Jake was picked to go out third for his qualifying run. He sat on the pole position for quite awhile until Matt DiBenedetto went out on track. Then it was Alex Yontz who laid down a blistering lap, leaving Jake the third place starting spot.
“I really would have liked the pole,” Jake smiled after qualifying had concluded. “But I’m okay with this. We’ll get to the front no matter what.”
The race was delayed due to a couple of local races taking up more time and a little more clean up than expected on the track. The UARA-Stars finally got their turn at the famed Half Mile around 9pm. Just as the cars were rolling out on track, Jake realized he had no radio communication with the crew. The crew worked hard to get what little communication going as they could and got Jake back out on the track just as the green flag was ready to fly.
“Jake, let’s just calm down here and we’ll be alright,” coached Crew Chief, Nick Hutchins. “If you can hear me, let’s just conserve what radio we do have.”
Once the race got underway, the radio problems seemed to diminish. Jake was able to hear the crew and focus on the task ahead. The car was running well for the first 70 laps of the race, experiencing a slight tight condition.
“The car is just a little on the tight side,” Jake called out to the crew during an early caution. “I’m just trying different lines out here. I think I found one, let me know the lap times.”
Running steadily in third, on lap 77, Jake calls out to the crew that he is losing power. After dodging traffic with a slow car, Jake finally got his car to pit road on lap 85. The team quickly went to work checking the motor, but found it was the battery that had gone bad. They put in a new one and got Jake back out on track, 25 laps down.
“I know this is frustrating,” commented Hutchins. “But let’s just try to get through this without wrecking the car.”
The excitement wasn’t quite over for the young driver when cars began to spin on the frontstretch right in front of Jake. He narrowly missed the wreckage and ended up bringing the car home in one piece. Jake finished 25 laps down and was 22nd in the running order.
“I really want the thank Fatz Café for helping us out this weekend,” commented the 16 year-old driver. “They kept us fed all weekend long. I also need to thank Made in Multiples. I just wish we could have given them a better finish to cheer about.”
Jake’s next race will be with the UARA-Stars Late Model series at Dillon Speedway in Dillon, S.C. The race will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008.
Jake will be appearing at the NASCAR Speedpark at the Concord Mills Mall in Concord, N.C. on Tuesday, May 20. He will be racing on the Family 500 kart track with NASCAR stars, AJ Allmendinger and Eric McClure from 3p to 4p and will be signing autographs for fans from 4p to 5p.
