Virginia Racer Impressive In Second UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Start
Bristol Motor Speedway (TN) is notorious for rough and tumble racing that every racecar driver loves. Cliff Daniels, along with his Charlie Daniels Racing team, had high hopes for his first time driving on the famous track; he certainly did not disappoint. In only his second UARA-STARS race, the 19-year-old driver backed up his amazing debut with another top-ten finish, this time a third-place run.
A full-day test session at the track allowed Daniels to get comfortable with the racing surface before the actual race weekend.
“My first laps when we tested were a little hairy,” said Daniels. “You’re going so fast, alot faster than we’ve ever been on a half-mile racetrack.”
Bristol’s reputation was not enough to worry Daniels, who was ready to race at the historic venue.
“We really had a lot of anticipation for this race,” said Daniels. “We were excited for it, but we knew there would be a lot of cars that would be fast in qualifying.”
Daniels did not let his apprehension about qualifying affect his performance in any way. He took to the track and made two consistent 16.025-second passes, which were good enough for a 12th-place starting position.
Satisfied with his qualifying run, Daniels set his sights on the major goal: winning the race.
“Everybody wants to win, and that’s what we were going for,” said Daniels. “Our expectations, knowing the competition in the UARA series and all the experience in the series, were to run with these guys (and) be competitive at the end and contend for the win.”
Daniels certainly gained some respect during the weekend. He crossed the finish line in third place earning him his second top-ten finish and his first top-five finish in only his second series start. He was also honored with the top Rookie of the Race award, his second of the year, making him two for two in the UARA series this season.
“It was a fun race to drive. I had fun racing with all these guys.”
Now that he has proved himself once again on the track, Daniels is looking to the future.
“This is definitely going to build up some momentum,” explained Daniels. “Hopefully we’ll be able to run this series as much as we can. We’ll be back here in July, definitely, and we’re looking forward to it.”
