Heading into this weekend’s action several drivers have emerged as this year’s favorite. With a long way yet to go in the championship races the gauntlet has definitely been laid down.

The Victory Lap Late Model division has seen two winners, yet one driver has really made it known that to take home the 2008 Championship and the $10,000 check that goes with it you will have to no doubted have to go through him. Walker Arthur of Forest, VA picked up a huge victory this past weekend in round one of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T, setting himself up to be the only driver eligible for the big bonus. Arthur currently sits atop the division point lead over Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD, Donnie Marshall Jr. of Gloucester, VA, rookie Ben Bowie of Brandywine, MD and Anthony Kincaid of Hayes, VA. Defending Champion Austin Hubbard of Laurel, DE rebounded from a week one mechanical failure and is currently eighth in points.

Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC has dominated the New Generation Racing Sprint Car divisions first two events and has strung together three straight victories dating back to the 2007 Fall Classic. Bolac leads the points over Mary Anne Williams of Chester, VA, defending Champion Craig Folmar of Philipsburg, PA, Eric Keck of Providence Forge, VA and top rookie Brent Bordeaux of Fredericksburg, VA.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA has strung together two very strong runs picking up victories in the process. Shelton has overcome the gremlins that have plagued him in prior years. Shelton currently leads the points by 23 points over J.R. Guy of Mechanicsville, MD, Roger Jamerson of Glen Allen, VA, Doug Johnson of Hayes, VA and Kenny Moreland of Waldorf, MD.

In the Budweiser Modifieds a rookie has taken center stage at the start of the 2008 campaign with two wins in as many races. Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA currently leads the division points over Eric Erwin of Beaver Dam, VA, Page Harrison of Jetersville, VA, Josh Harris of Gloucester, VA and Curtis Barricks of Chesterfield, VA. Defending Champion Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA rebounded from a week one mechanical failure to finish a close second in week 2 and is currently sixth in points.

The new Limited Stock Car division has a new VMS competitor at the top of the points. With a win and a second Wayne Suite Sr. of Mechanicsville, MD is the divisions current point leader over Defending Champion Bob Terry of Stafford, VA, Wesley Givens of New Kent, VA, Andrew Miller of Bena, VA and Lee Oldaker III of Suffolk, VA.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track affiliate, is a ½ mile dirt oval track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA in Jamaica, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
