Andrew Carlsen Notches First Top Ten & First Rookie of the Race Award
Apr 17, 2008 - updated Apr 17th, 2008 4:32pm

Cornelius, NC. --

In only his second start of the UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Car Series, nineteen year old Andrew Carlsen drove a smooth, smart race en route to his first top ten finish of the year. Adding to the successful night, Carlsen scored his first Melling Select Rookie of the Race award in his first start on the 4/10 mile track known as Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, VA.

Carlsen qualified his 131 Main, Old West Gunsmith, Hangers Cleaners Ford Fusion 15th - just 0.253 seconds off the pole winning run. Quite impressive, considering he struggled all day from electrical issues and got the problem fixed just before qualifying ended, being 27th of the 29 cars to take time. Once the green flag dropped, Carlsen looked more like a veteran as he smoothly and steadily moved through the field, passing veteran and rookie drivers alike. The Carlsen Racing Ford Fusion was strong all day after fixing a distributor issue just before qualifying.

Carlsen secured an eighth place finish on the 4/10 mile speedplant as the 150-lap race went into overtime on a green, white, checkered finish. He won the Melling Select Rookie of the Race award by holding off two other Rookie of the Year contenders on the final lap. For Carlsen, he was just excited to get a top ten after the long day of struggling.

"We had a fast car even in practice, but we just couldn't get rid of the gremlins during practice," said Carlsen. "The team worked awfully hard all day and when it counted, they figured out what the problem was and corrected it. We were fast and I'm glad our finish shows how good we were and how hard we worked today. I can't thank this team enough for the job they did."

Carlsen is hoping that this week's Melling Select Rookie of the Race award is just the first of many, but he knows with the caliber of competition in the UARA-STARS division, he's going to be up on the wheel every lap to make that happen.

"Getting this rookie of the race award is great, but we've got to keep on digging. Now we've got to get top fives and contend for wins and we'll keep getting these awards and we can put ourselves in position to win the rookie of the year."

Carlsen and the entire UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Car tour will be back in action at Orange County Speedway on Saturday, April 26th and there's no doubt this rookie driver is pumped up and ready to take on the 3/8 mile bullring and improve on his eighth place finish.
