Orange County Speedway 4/12 event story

Rougemont, NC --

Press Release

Justin Johnson recovered from an early penalty that sent him to the rear and patiently worked his way to victory in the 150-lap Late Model main event of Orange County Speedway's rain-delayed NAPA 330 season opener Saturday night.
Durham resident Johnson took the lead from Stacey Puryear in the 131st lap and led the rest of the way on the steeply-banked three-eighths mile asphalt track. Ronald Hill of Rougemont, the track's 2006 champion of the TAG-OUT Late Models, overtook Puryear for second with four laps left. Puryear nursed an overheating car home third.
Johnson said he was "really, really mad" when officials blackflagged him to the rear as penalty for a skirmish with Payton Sellers in the 39th lap. The two were battling for second place when "I got up under him and he spun," Johnson said. "I didn't intentionally turn him, but I guess they thought I did."

The 21-year-old Johnson said it took him about "30 laps to settle down and get my rhythm back. I realized I had time to get back up there."
Johnson's bid for victory was enchanced when leader David Blankenship's engine erupted at lap 76. Another contender, 15-year-old Kenny Forbes of Bullock, was eliminated when he spun in the oil. Forbes was running several car lengths behind in third place "and around she went and we hit the wall really hard."

Puryear inherited the lead and was challenged briefly by Johnson before pulling out to a 10-car-length lead. "My car was getting so loose," said Puryear. "Justin started pulling up there with me and I couldn't hang on no more."
Runner-up Hill said he was "pretty pleased with second consider how we started." He ran steadily in ninth place the first half of the race and "I was just saving my right front tire until it really counted."
Defending TAG-OUT Late Model champion Terry Dease's remarkable consistency here ended when he dropped out at lap 24 with a mechanical failure. It ended a streak of 13 races of finishes sixth or better for the Oxford mechanic.
Bruce Anderson won a 50-Lap Limited Sportsman race after leader Danny Willis Jr. was blackflagged for jumping a final restart with four laps left.

Eddie Capps lapped all but runner-up Cory Purnell in a 35-lap Grand Stock race.
Joey Throckmorton overtook Casey Pope in the final lap for victory in a 20-lap Pure Stock race.
Gary Lloyd remained unbeaten here in a 25-lap race for the Southern Ground Pounders vintage Sportsman cars. Ricky Seay finished first for the SGP's Modified class when leader Robert Isley hit a spinning car.
Pole starter Jason Mays led all the way in a 25-lap contest for Virginia Mini Cup three-quarter scale race cars.
Orange County Speedway's next event is April 26th with a 150-lap race for the touring United Automobile Racing Association Late Model series.
