Former national champion Peyton Sellers hopes to compete in Late Model race Saturday at South Boston

South Boston, VA. --

A familiar face in a familiar racecar is hoping to compete in the 150-lap Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division race Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

Peyton Sellers, the 2005 NASCAR Weekly Series national champion and winner of the track title at America’s Hometown Track, is making plans to compete in the featured attraction of the Randy Lajoie’s Safer Racer 150 NASCAR Whelen All American Series program. The first of six total races Saturday night is slated to get underway at 7 p.m.

Sellers, who resides in Danville, Va., will be motoring the Sandy Stigall-owned Chevrolet out of Roxboro, N.C. It will be one of approximately “six to eight races” that Sellers will drive the Late Model machine this season, Sellers said Thursday.

“We were hoping to get some testing in [Thursday],” Sellers said. “The weather isn’t looking too good for us on that, but we will try again Friday. We’re going to be there Saturday if the weather is good enough for us to do it. We’re going to do everything we can to be there. We’re really looking forward to it.”

When Sellers isn’t behind the wheel of the Stigall-owned Late Model Stock Car machine this season, he will be competing for the third straight year in the NASCAR Grand National Division Camping World Series. The 24-year-old Sellers announced recently he had signed a deal to drive the number 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet in the Camping World Series in 2008.

“I am real excited about that,” Sellers said. “We have tested twice at Greenville-Pickens and did real well both times. I think everything is on track with that.”

Sellers will open NASCAR Grand National Division Camping World Series action on April 19 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, S.C. The Camping World Series is scheduled to compete at South Boston Speedway on Saturday, May 31, in the Strutmasters.com 150.

Sellers claimed Rookie of the Year honors in the East Series of NASCAR Grand National Division racing in 2006, while securing one victory. Last year, Sellers finished third in the division’s points chase, while recording five top-five finishes and 10 runs in the top 10 during the campaign. Sellers capped off his successful 2007 season with a runner-up finish in the Toyota All-Star Showdown in California.

Other racing slated for South Boston Speedway’s first night race of the season Saturday includes a 50-lap event for the Limited Sportsman Division, twin races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and action for the drivers in the INEX Legends Series and the touring Legendary Flatheads.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 1 p.m. with practice for all divisions beginning at 2:15 p.m. and continuing through 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 5:15 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 and children, ages 6 and under, will be admitted free. All youth must be accompanied by a paying adult to receive discounted admission.
