South Boston Speedway News
Frank Deiny Jr. will be in a different role when SoBo opens 2008 season with running of Easter Bunny 150
Mar 18, 2008 - updated Mar 18th, 2008 5:48pm

South Boston, VA. --

Nearly every time Frank Deiny Jr. is at South Boston Speedway he is mentioned as one of the favorites to claim a victory.

Deiny might be in Victory Lane following the season-opening Easter Bunny 150 Saturday afternoon at South Boston Speedway, but it will be as a role of car owner instead of car driver.

The green flag for the start of the 2008 season will fly at America’s Hometown Track at 2 p.m. Saturday. A total of five races are on tap for the special afternoon start of the season-opener. The 150-lap Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division race will highlight the afternoon of racing and will be joined by events for Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, the Yellow Book USA Southern Vintage Modified Division and the INEX Legends Series.

The Easter Bunny will be on hand for the opening event of the season and will take part in an Easter Egg Hunt with children at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Deiny hasn’t completely thrown in the towel on racing in NASCAR Whelen All American Series events, but his main focus when it comes to Late Model Stock Car Division competition this season will be on the five cars racing out of the FDJ Motorsports stables in Ashland, Va.

Two of those cars, the number 44 of Roxboro, N.C. driver Justin Johnson, and the number 54 of Yorktown, Va. competitor Dude Gibbs are set to race a complete season at South Boston Speedway and Deiny has hopes that both will be factors in the chase for the track’s Late Model Stock Car championship. Johnson and Gibbs are slated to be in the lineup Saturday afternoon to square off against a talented field of Late Model Stock Car Division drivers.

“My main goal here is [Johnson and Gibbs],” Deiny said following a recent practice session at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval. “I’m as excited as I can be. I’m hoping we can win a championship or two this season. That’s what our goal is going into the season.”

Deiny will also field Late Model Stock Car teams in 2008 at Motor Mile Speedway in Virginia.

While Deiny will not compete for a track championship as a driver at South Boston Speedway this season, he does plan on strapping on his helmet for “two or three [Late Model] races” during the year.

“I plan on running two or three Late Model races here this year,” Deiny said, adding that he was doing so “to keep Justin and Dude honest. I can’t let them show me up too much,” he joked.

The 34-year-old Deiny definitely has plenty of experience in his knowledge bank when it comes to South Boston Speedway. In 2001, Deiny claimed the Late Model Stock Car Championship at South Boston Speedway for the second of five career track titles he has secured. He also has recorded victories in over 100 Late Model Stock Car Division races during his years behind the wheel.

“I stopped counting when I got to 100,” Deiny said. “It’s more than that, but I’m not sure how much more.”

The goal for Deiny now, however, is to begin collecting victories as a car owner.

“That would be nice,” Deiny said. “That’s what we’re here for, to win races and win a championship.”

Pit gates will open Saturday at 9 a.m. with practice for all divisions beginning at 10:30 a.m. and continuing through noon. Grandstand gates will open at noon and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 12:45 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 when accompanied by an adult. Children, ages six and under, will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
