New Tracks Mean New Challenges for PASS South Teams
Feb 24, 2008 - updated Feb 24th, 2008 12:15pm

NAPLES, Maine --

New venues abound on the 2008 Pro All Stars Series (PASS) South schedule, and the addition of these speedways to the mix creates an X factor in the chase for the 2008 PASS South Super Late Model Championship.

PASS South will kick off 2008 on familiar ground at Hickory (NC) Motor Speedway on March 22nd. The Easter Bunny 150 enters its third season as the South opener, and serves as round one of the inaugural four race PASS National Championship series. Look for a host of PASS North invaders to join their Southern brethren for this one.

Once the Easter Bunny is in the records books, PASS South teams will journey to the first of three new venues in a row. Dillon (SC) Motor Speedway will host the South Carolina Clash on Saturday April 5th, and the 4/10 mile egg shaped speedway will present a new challenge to the PASS touring pros. Then it’s off to South Georgia on Saturday April 26th for a first time visit to Cordele’s Watermelon Capital Speedway. The D-shaped 3/8 mile at Watermelon has plenty of racing room, with no walls off the corners and the long curved backstretch. It’s another track that will test the touring teams’ setup skills and should produce the kind of fast, close racing that PASS Super Late Models are so well known for.

If you haven’t been to Radford Virginias Motor Mile Speedway, you’ve missed out on one of the east’s fastest and most attractive short tracks. On Saturday May 10th you’ll have the opportunity to see the fastest full fendered race cars in the east take on this super fast oval for the first time. With 55 feet of racing room all the way around and plenty of banking, this beautiful 10,000 seat oval can be counted on for some fast, exciting action.

Saturday June 23rd will see the first PASS South visit to Raleigh North Carolina’s Wake County Speedway. This tight little bullring measures just under a quarter mile in the racing groove and with walls all the way around, both inside and outside, racing room is at a premium. Patience, a good set up, and perhaps home track experience could easily produce a surprise winner at Wake County.

Asheboro North Carolina’s historic Caraway Speedway will host the PASS South traveling pros for the first time on Saturday August 30th, and the very next weekend will see the first PASS South visit to the Volunteer State. Newport Tennessee’s Newport Speedway is the last of six new ovals on the 2008 schedule and the September 6th show down will play a major role in deciding the PASS South Championship as the season begins its stretch run to the finale, the Mason Dixon 500 at South Boston (VA) Speedway on Friday and Saturday, October 24th and 25th.

A diverse, expanded schedule awaits PASS South racers and race fans for 2008. The competition will be fast, tough, and wide open. One things for certain, though. The driver and team that can best adapt to these six new speedways will have a great shot at taking down the 2008 PASS South title.
