Virginia Motor Speedway Releases 2008 Schedule
Jan 7, 2008 - updated Jan 7th, 2008 11:22am
Web posted by

Jamaica, VA. --

The tentative 2008 schedule for Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway has been released and includes 25 weeks of Championship action starting with opening night March 29th and ending September 20th with the 39th Annual Fall Classic. To see the entire 2008 schedule in its entirety visit the Speedway’s website at www.vamotorspeedway.com.

Returning during the 2008 season will be the very successful Victory Lap Late Model $25K Challenge Series for steel head late models. The four race series will offer a bonus program for multiple wins. The Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge will once again pay a $5,000 bonus to anyone winning two of the four events with it going to $15,000 if a driver wins three of four events. And finally, if a driver sweeps all four events that driver would pick up a cool $25,000 bonus. Track rules for the Victory Lap Late Model Division will apply.

“With the continued success of the Victory Lap Challenge over the last five years we felt it was imperative to bring back the Challenge Series and continue to give our steel head late models four premier events during the 2008 season,” commented Track Owner Bill Sawyer.

“Last year’s results prove how intense and competitive the division has become as there were four different winners during the challenge series,” added Sawyer.

Tentative dates for the Victory Lap Late Model $25K Challenge Series are April 19th, July 4th, August 2nd and August 30th.

VMS will also hold four special events for the Super Late Models during the 2008 season. Tentatively scheduled are the World of Outlaws Late Model Series on Friday, April 11th, the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) June 14th and the 29th Annual USA 100 on August 9th. The USA 100 will see the MACS competitors competing against the Carolina Clash in a co-sanctioned event. The fourth show will be an unsanctioned $5000 to win event that will be paired with the return of the Advance Auto Parts Super Dirt Series Big Block Modified Series on Thursday, May 1st. Plans are being finalized to have several of NASCAR’s stars here and racing in both the Big Block and Super Late Model events.

The Speedway will once again host the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series in the 2nd Annual Paul Sawyer Memorial, but this year the stakes are much higher as the Speedway will boost the purse to a $10,000 to win event, one of the largest purses of the year for the Big Block modified competitors.

Also making a return for 2008 will be Monster Slam featuring Grave Digger and Dennis Anderson. The “Night of Mayhem and Destruction” will feature some of the nations best Monster Trucks in freestyle and single elimination competition.

Returning for 2008 will be “Fast Friday’s”, seven Friday night shows for our weekly competitors. The move to the Friday night racing, on the seven select shows, in response to NASCAR’s nationally televised Saturday night events was a huge success and the Speedway expects “Fast Friday’s” to grow even bigger in 2008.

The Speedway will hold two open practices for all divisions on Saturday, March 15th and Saturday, March 22nd from 9am till 5pm. All cars must be registered and inspected before allowed to practice. Competitors are encouraged to register before the open practice. Registrations are currently being accepted with the top twenty in each class having their number saved until February 1st when all numbers will become first come first served. Competitors can obtain a 2007 registration form by going to the tracks website or by calling the speedway Monday through Friday 10am through 3pm at (804) 758-1867.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track affiliate, is a 1/2-mile, dirt oval. The track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA in Jamaica, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from the Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads markets.

To learn more about Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway and its 2007 schedule of events, fans may call the Speedway office at (804) 758-1VMS or visit the track’s web site at www.vamotorspeedway.com.
