In racing, wins are hard to come by especially in the ultra competitive Arena Racing USA-Charlotte series that races at the Cricket Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. So when you get a lucky break to get a series win you take advantage of it as much as you can and that’s exactly what Tex Motorsports driver Nick Hoffman did at last weekend’s Arena Racing USA race on November 17th.
Hoffman finished second in the A-main event and followed it up with another runner-up finish behind fellow competitor Kyle Kouchinsky in the nights bonus points race named the “top dog” event. However, after post race inspection by Arena Racing USA officials revealed that Kouchinsky’s #49 car was deemed illegal, the win was in question. After a few days of intense meetings Arena Racing USA officials decided to penalized the #49 team by taking away Kouchinsky’s top dog win, his fourth place finish in the A-main event, he must forfeit all points accumulated for the night’s event, as well as a ten point penalty at the end of the season points championship standings, a monetary fine and put on probation for the next three Arena Racing USA events.
As a result of these penalties the #15 Charlotte Checkers race team and fifteen year old driver Nick Hoffman was declared winner of the “top dog” race getting his first win in an unlikely fashion. Hoffman moved to second in the championship points standings just three points behind current leader Josh Turner, while Kouchinsky’s penalties moved him from first to nineteenth in the current standings.
“To be honest with you I think the penalties towards Kyle (Kouchinsky) were a little harsh but Arena Racing did what they felt necessary to do in order to get the attention of other competitors and I think they definitely did that. We will take the win don’t get me wrong about that but as a racer I want to know I beat the best when I win and also at the end of the season once it comes down to crowning a champion I want to have beaten the best. I just really hate that the penalties took Kyle (Kouchinsky) pretty much out of the championship race and that’s not right,” stated Nick Hoffman defending Arena Racing USA champion.
