13th Annual SoBo 300 Could Be Big Boon For The Lucky Winner
Oct 18, 2007 - updated Oct 18th, 2007 10:41am
Web posted by

South Boston, VA. --

For some lucky driver in South Boston Speedway’s Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division, number 13 could be a lucky number.

South Boston Speedway will conclude its 50th anniversary season on the weekend of Friday and Saturday, October 26 and 27, with its biggest NASCAR Late Model Stock Car race of the season, the 13th Annual SoBo 300.

And, with the winner taking home $10,000 from the $52,300 event, this year’s 13th annual running of the track’s 300-lap, 120-mile extravaganza, which gets the green flag at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, will be a huge boon for some lucky driver.

For the past 12 years, South Boston Speedway has staged its rich extra-distance race, a race that has seen a number of noted drivers visit Victory Lane and claim a big cash prize. Among that group is Frank Deiny Jr, of Ashland, Va. who has won the event three times, including last year’s event.

Also among the former winners are drivers, who, like Deiny, have gone on to race on larger touring circuits. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Scott Riggs of Bahama, N.C. won the event in 1999, former winners Mike Dillon and Kevin Grubb went on to race in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division. Woody Howard of Chesapeake, Va., who won the event in 2003, is a regular on the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series circuit as is Deiny.

The season-ending SoBo 300 has traditionally attracted a number of the region’s top NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division drivers to South Boston Speedway and this year’s event is no exception. The early entry list for the race appears as a “Who’s Who” list of NASCAR Late Model Stock Car drivers.

Among the early entrants are Deiny and Ford drivers Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. and Greg Edwards of Poquoson, Va., both of whom have won races at South Boston Speedway this season, and former track champion, Brandon Butler of Sutherland, Va.

South Boston, Va. driver Stacy Puryear, a former USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series competitor, Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J., C.E. Falk III of Virginia Beach, Va., Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va., Owen Miller of Emporia, Va. and Ronald Hill of Rougemont, N.C. are also entered.

Two female competitors, Tiffany Daniels of Smithfield, Va. and Ashley Huffman of Hickory, N.C. are entered. The entry list also includes Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C., Tommy Lemons Jr. of Troy, N.C., Michael Hardin of Pomfret, Md., Jamey Lee of Florence, S.C., Ed Williams of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Joey Coulter of Miami Springs, Fla.

Three of the top competitors in South Boston Speedway’s Limited Sportsman Division in 2007, two-time defending champion Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va., Danny Willis Jr, of Cluster Springs, Va. and Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C., have also filed entries for the race.

Advance tickets for the SoBo 300 are priced at $10 with adult general admission tickets being priced at $15 when grandstand gates open at 11 a.m. on race day. Tickets for youth ages 10-15 are $10 each. Kids ages nine and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.

There will be plenty of action for fans to enjoy throughout the weekend as activities get underway on Friday, October 26, with practice from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. The $500 GE Tile & Design Pole Award will be on the line when qualifying time trials begin at 4 p.m. The fastest 15 cars in Friday’s qualifying time trials will be locked into the field for Saturday’s SoBo 300.

Admission for Friday’s practice and qualifying will be $5 for adults. Kids ages nine and under will be admitted free.

On Saturday, October 27 at 12 noon, 30-lap qualifying races will be run to determine starting positions 16-30. A 25-lap Last Chance race at 1 p.m. will determine the final four starting spots. Two provisional starting spots will be available to complete the 36-car starting field for the 300-lap feature race.

The SoBo 300 feature race will be run in two segments with the first segment being 150 laps (60 miles) and the second consisting of the remaining laps. There will be a 15-minute break between the segments during which teams can change two tires and make adjustments to the cars.

A $500 DRP Performance Products & South Boston Speedway Halfway Leader Award will go the driver leading the race at lap 150.

For more information about the SoBo 300 or South Boston Speedway’s 50th anniversary season, visit the speedway’s website at www.southbostonspeedway.com or telephone the speedway at 434-572-4947 or 1-877-440-1540.
