Imagine holding your breath for 250 laps…..surrounded by 35 of the finest Late Model Stocks drivers in the Southeast…..wide open….on a .363 mile banked asphalt oval. Imagine being one of only 10 drivers left on track for the final green-white-checkered finish. Imagine the pile of sheet metal and parts growing in the infield. Welcome to The Fall Brawl at Hickory Motor Speedway!
This year's event offers a 250-lap Late Model Stocks guts-show for the $5,000 winner's purse and custom-designed signature trophy. With the off-season coming up, and all winter to rebuild the cars, nobody will be holding anything back. Let the games begin….
PEPSI of Hickory returns as Title Sponsor of the event for the second consecutive year. As part of their sponsorship, PEPSI has arranged for the first-ever public showing of their new “Dale Earnhardt Jr. #88 AMP Energy” NEXTEL Cup race car. The car will be on display Sunday from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm.
“All of us at PEPSI are extremely pleased to return as Title Sponsor for the biggest and baddest LMS event in the Southeast at the legendary Hickory Motor Speedway.” PEPSI’s Doug Houser also said that they were very excited to be able to secure the #88 Mountain Dew AMP Energy car for the first-ever public showing. “We would like to thank Hendricks Motorsports for their hard work in making this possible and are proud that we are able to showcase this new car to the many fans who will be attending this great event.”
Tommy Houston will serve as 2007 Grand Marshal for “The FALL BRAWL Presented by PEPSI”. Houston is a previous two-time Hickory Motor Speedway Track Champion (1975 & 76), and had an already big weekend ahead of him. He will be driving the Official Pace Car for the “Dollar General 300” NASCAR Busch Series event on Saturday, Oct 13th, at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, when Jason Keller will be attempting to break Houston’s long-held record of “Most Starts” in the history of the Busch Series. He will also be meeting with Winston Kelley, Director of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, on the same day to give guidance on historical matters and upcoming displays for the HOF.
PEPSI of Hickory has many exciting prizes and surprises in store for racefans during the two-day event. The first 150 kids through the gates on Sunday will receive free PEPSI Thunderstix, guaranteed to drive parents crazy. Late Model drivers will also participate in a PEPSI “Hacky Ball Toss”, with one lucky fan receiving $100 Lowes Gift Card, and another a Dale Earnhardt Jr. AMP t-shirt and #88 Mountain Dew hat. Many more PEPSI prizes will be given away in Trivia Contests throughout the day.
As the longest Late Model Stocks event of the year, Late Model Stocks drivers from across the country make the haul to participate and add their names to the list of previous winners. Previous winners of the prestigious event include:
2001 Keith Bumgarner
2002 Dennis Setzer
2003 Denny Hamlin
2004 Matt McCall
2005 Jamie Yelton
2006 B. J. Mackey
The custom-designed trophy for the race was manufactured by Xtreme Trophies of Hendersonville, NC, and stands a whopping 51” tall, weighing in at 40 lbs. Made of walnut and Lucite, it incorporates the “Brawl” theme with a boxing glove and heavyweight belt.
Two other special events will be held in conjunction with “The FALL BRAWL Presented by PEPSI”: the inaugural running of the “Dennis James Memorial” for Super Trucks and the inaugural “Wayne Moose Memorial” for Limited Late Models. Dennis James was a previous Hickory Motor Speedway Chief Steward, and was serving as Official Flagman for the Craftsman Truck Series for the past several years. Wayne Moose was the owner/operator of WM Parts, who supplied the Hickory Motor Speedway Parts Truck for many years to the track and their racers. Both passed away this year. Both events will be extended lap, enhanced purse events for their respective raceteams.
The two-day special event kicks off Saturday, October 13th, with Practice starting at 11am. Qualifying for all Divisions starts at 2pm, then a special 35-lap race by the “Old School Racing Series” is scheduled for 3pm. The “Old School Racing Series” is a brand new division using cars that previously ran in the USAR Hooters Pro-Cup Touring Series. These cars no longer meet the template guidelines of the new USAR racecars, but still have the same great competition factor and many previous USAR drivers. Admission for the Saturday events is $5 for adults, kids 12 and under free, with Grandstands opening at 11am.
On Sunday, Grandstands will open at 12pm, with the On-Track Autograph Session for Late Model Stocks starting at 12:30, Pre-Race Ceremonies at 1pm, and the first race scheduled for 1:30. The first event will be a 20-lap “Last Chance” shootout (if more than 32 LMS attempt to make the field for the main event), followed by the 50-lap “Dennis James Memorial” Super Trucks event, then 250 laps of Late Model Stocks, with the final event being the “Wayne Moose Memorial” Limited Late Models 50-lapper. Admission for Sunday’s events will be $15 for Adults, $10 for Teens & Seniors, $5 Kids 7-12, with a Family Pass available for $40 that will admit 2 Adults and all their kids under age 16. Advance tickets are available now at Speedway Offices.
