Speedway to wrap up '07 points season with "Toyota Championship Saturday" Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Six feature events are planned for this Saturday, Oct. 6, as Langley Speedway puts the wraps on its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series points season with "Toyota Championship Saturday."
The lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Dunkum's Machine Shop/Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks (40 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Cook's Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. and afternoon practice rounds run from 2 'til 4. Time trials begin at 4:30, right after the 4:15 drivers meeting. Pre-race activities get under way at 6:30 when fans will be welcomed onto the track to meet and greet their favorite drivers and get an up-close look at the cars and trucks. The first feature contest goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

The Speedway held its final weekly "test and tune" session of the season this evening.. Summaries of all Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links.

Following last weekend's INEX Legends race, in which Ryan Crites apparently sewed up the '07 championship, Jeremy Cook filed a protest of Crites' carburetor. The part was shipped to INEX headquarters for inspection and nothing was found to be amiss, so Crites may officially begin celebrating his Legends crown. Had the protest been upheld, then Cook would have been this year's division champ.

In disciplinary news from last Saturday, Super Street driver Tommy Sweeney was fined and placed on probation for the 2008 season.
After a slam-bang season finale, Sweeney, who finished second to Steve Dill in the race and in the point standings, expressed his disappointment by interrupting Dill's Victory Lane interview with a protracted burnout.
Also, Legends driver Chris Lemonds has been suspended from the track for the remainder of the current season and all of 2008.
During last Saturday's Legends race, Lemonds ignored repeated directives from officials, who were trying to line up the field for a restart at lap 21, following the third caution flag. Eventually, officials motioned Lemonds off the track - another order he refused to heed.

As we head into this weekend's final points races, let's take a quick look at the six divisions that will be in action on Saturday and what the leaders will need to do to hold onto their positions.

• LATE MODELS -
Leader: Danny Edwards.
Closest Challenger: Mark Wertz.
Margin: 34 (1,090-1,056).
Tiebreaker Edge: Edwards. If Wertz wins on Saturday, though, the advantage will swing his way.
Bottom Line: Edwards clinches the title by finishing 17th or better. The last time he suffered that poor of an outing was Sept. 24, 2005.

• GRAND STOCKS -
Leader: Paul Lubno.
Closest Challenger: Danny Harrell.
Margin: 44 (490-446).
Tiebreaker Edge: Lubno. If Harrell wins on Saturday, Lubno would still have the upper hand, based on a 2-0 advantage in fourth-place finishes.
Bottom Line: Lubno clinches the championship by finishing 23rd or better. Three sixth-place runs represent his worst runs this season.

• MODIFIEDS -
Leader: Shawn Balluzzo.
Closest Challenger: Joe Scarbrough.
Margin: 20 (428-408).
Tiebreaker Edge: Balluzzo. Scarbrough would seize the advantage with a win on Saturday, though.
Bottom Line: Balluzzo clinches his second straight Mod title by finishing 10th or better. He hasn't been outside the top five all year.

• SUPER TRUCKS -
Leader: Craig Firman.
Closest Challenger: Evan VanLeeuwen.
Margin: 34 (470-436).
Tiebreaker Edge: Firman, who leads 6-0 in race wins.
Bottom Line: Firman seals the championship by finishing 18th or better. The division is averaging 10.7 trucks in its starting fields this year, so Firman could clinch when he rolls off the grid this week.

• WOLF TRUCKS -
Leader: Jeff Sampson.
Closest Challenger: Randy Bradsher.
Margin: 24 (634-610).
Tiebreaker Edge: Sampson, who leads 9-2 in race wins.
Bottom Line: Sampson takes the title by finishing 13th or better. The largest Wolf Truck field this season has been eight. It's likely that Sampson clinches by simply starting the race.

• UCARS -
Leader: Kevin Alves.
Closest Challenger: Jamie Sample.
Margin: 66 (622-556).
Bottom Line: It's over. Alves clinched the title with his third-place run in last week's
race.

Steve Carlson of LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, Wisc., has claimed the 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship. His final margin over second-place finisher Woody Pitkat of Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn., was six points -862-856. Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., was third in the final tally, 18 points behind Carlson.
Langley regulars in the national top 500 include: Greg Edwards (61st), Danny Edwards (67th), Mark Wertz (69th), Shawn Balluzzo (159th), Jeff Shiflett (226th), Dean Shiflett (283rd), Craig Eastep (433rd) and Jeff Sampson (439th).
Each driver in the final top 500 will receive a certificate from NASCAR to mark their accomplishment.

The final points race for the Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts will take place this Sunday, Oct. 7, during a regular Hampton Roads Kart Club meet at the Speedway. David Phelps holds a commanding lead in the current points rundown.
• • •
With the regular season winding to a close, fans can begin looking forward to Langley's schedule of post-season special events.
On Saturday, Oct. 13, the track will host the Second Annual Virginia State UCAR Championship and the Inaugural King/Queen of Champs race (a combo event for the HRKC and MACKA Champ Karts). The Wolf Trucks and Pro 6 Series will also be on hand. Gates open at 12 noon with qualifying at 4:30, heat races at 6:15 and feature races at 7. Calvin Edwards Jr., Realtor with E-Z Vest Realty, has signed on as a sponsor of the event.
The Second Annual "Night of Destruction," presented by Bud's Heating & Air Conditioning, is slated for Saturday, Oct. 20, featuring an Enduro, demolition derbies and an assortment of entertaining "novelty" races.
Langley Speedway will bring down the curtain on its '07 campaign on Friday, Oct. 26, with its annual award gala. The event will be held at the Hellenic Community Center in Newport News, Va. Tickets are $35 apiece and are available at the Speedway office.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
