NAPA AutoCare Centers Night set for this Saturday Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
at Langley Speedway

Six feature events are planned for this Saturday, Sept. 22, when Langley Speedway plays host to the 22nd event on its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule - NAPA AutoCare Centers Night at the Races.
This week's lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Dunkum's Machine Shop/Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks (40 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (25 laps); Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps); and, A/C Mechanical Services/Steadfast Security & Investigations MACKA Champ Karts (20 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice rounds begin at 2 and wrap up at 4. Time trials get under way at 4:30, following the 4:15 drivers meeting. Pre-race ceremonies are slated for 6:55 and the first feature contest gets the green flag at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.
• • •
Weather permitting, the Speedway will hold its regular, weekly "test and tune" session this evening. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. Since they have a race this weekend, MACKA teams are welcome to take part. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week's session.

Due to inclement weather, last night's "Wild Wacky Wednesday" show was called off.
Langley's Wednesday night racers complete their 2007 campaign next Wednesday, Sept. 26. The popular program includes "Time Attacks" (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

The thoughts and prayers of the entire Langley Speedway family go out to the family of John R. "Buster" Horne Sr. The Zuni, Va., resident passed away on Monday, Sept. 17.
Horne, 65, was a regular competitor at Langley from 1961 through the '70s. His son, Buster Jr., is a longtime Langley veteran and has wheeled the #6 machine to a fifth-place ranking in the current B&C Seafood Modified points rundown.
In addition to his son, Horne is survived by his wife of 46 years, Betty; a sister, Mary Prevatte; a brother, Ervin Horne; two grandchildren, Evan and Taylor Horne; and, two nieces, Marlene Skinner and Lori Ann Horne.
The family will hold a visitation on Friday, Sept. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home, which is located at 206 West Fourth Ave. in Franklin, Va. - just down the street from Buster Jr.'s business, Franklin Collision Center.
The family has suggested that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Langley Speedway offices will close at 12 noon on Friday, so track management and staff can attend that evening's visitation in Franklin.

After lurking just inside the top 10 for a good part of the season, Steve Carlson of LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, Wisc., has seized command in the battle for the '07 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship.
With two weeks left in the NASCAR points season, Carlson holds a 14-point edge over Woody Pitkat of Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn., 862-848.
Defending national champ Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., is third in the current standings, 26 points behind the leader.
Should he manage to overtake Carlson and Pitkat in the next two weeks, Morris would become just the second driver to score back-to-back national crowns since the series began in 1982. Missouri short-track legend Larry Phillips pulled off that feat twice - in 1991 and '92 and 1995 and '96.
• • •
Greg Edwards is the top-ranking Langley regular in NASCAR's current top 500, checking in at 51st. Other locals in the national standings include: Mark Wertz (67th), Danny Edwards (70th), Shawn Balluzzo (153rd), Jeff Shiflett (208th), Dean Shiflett (306th), Craig Eastep (418th) and Jeff Sampson (440th). Each driver in the final top 500 will receive a certificate from NASCAR.
• • •
In the NASCAR Virginia state championship chase, Morris leads a strong contingent of Motor Mile drivers at the head of the list. Greg Edwards, Wertz and Danny Edwards are sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, in the current state standings.
NASCAR's method for awarding state and national points in '07 differs from the traditional system used to award points at the individual tracks. That's how Wertz finds himself ahead of Danny Edwards in the state and national listings, while trailing him in the Langley Late Model standings.
• • •
The Med Express Urgent Super Streets and Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends will finish up their '07 campaigns on Saturday, Sept. 29, when Langley Speedway hosts USG Night. Also slated for action on the 29th are the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models, E-Z Auto Rental UCARs and Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
