Saturday Is Championship Night At South Boston Speedway
Sep 19, 2007 - updated Sep 19th, 2007 5:25pm
Web posted by

South Boston, VA. --

It will be Championship Night at South Boston Speedway Saturday night when the track stages its final points event of the season with the running of the Pabst Blue Ribbon 150 racing program. Saturday night’s Pabst Blue Ribbon 150 racing program will get the green flag at 7 p.m. with five races on tap for the night, three of which will determine track championships. Saturday’s Pabst Blue Ribbon 150 race-day schedule calls for registration to start and pit gates to open at 1 p.m. Practice will start at 2:15 p.m. and will continue until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open and ticket sales will begin at 5 p.m. Qualifying time trials will start at 5:15 p.m. and the first race of the night will get the green flag at 7 p.m. South Boston Speedway’s Early Bird Special will be in effect with adult general admission tickets being $8 until 6:30 p.m. and $10 after that. Youths ages 10-15 will be admitted for $5 and kids ages nine and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.

The Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division title will be decided in the 150-lap race for the division that will serve as the night’s feature event. Division titles will also be decided in races for the Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modified Division. A race for the track’s Limited Sportsman Division is also included on the Pabst Blue Ribbon 150 racing program. Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. will be looking to put the wraps on the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division title after having missed a chance to sew it up last week. Barker, a 10-time winner here this season, will enter the race with a hefty 46-point lead over Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. Under the points system used by South Boston Speedway, the race winner receives two points for every car in the race up to 25 cars, with the second-place finisher receiving two points less and so on.

As a result, Ramsey, for one thing, would need a minimum 24-car starting field. And, if that many cars start the race, Ramsey would have to win the race and Barker would have to finish last in order to win the track championship. In the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, defending division champion and division points leader Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C. holds a 20-point lead over Mark Francisco of Halifax, Va. going into the Pabst Blue Ribbon 150 racing program. While Watkins is not in nearly as comfortable a position as Barker is in the Late Model Stock Car Division, he does have a good cushion as Francisco will have to finish 12 positions ahead of Watkins in order to win the championship. Title races do not get much closer than the one that will be decided in Saturday night’s race for the Southern Vintage Modified Division.

Randy Smith of Bassett, Va. will be on the hot seat Saturday night as his lead over Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. is only a slim eight points. Donnie Lacks of Lynchburg, Va. is in third place but is only two points down to Cook and only 10 points out of the lead. The only division title that has been secured entering Saturday night’s race is the Limited Sportsman Division champion. Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. locked up his second straight division crown with a third-place finish here last weekend. Anderson, a 12-time winner, will bring a 64-point lead over second-place driver Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. into Saturday night’s Pabst Blue Ribbon 150 racing program. Willis holds a 26-point edge over third-place Brian Pembleton of Amelia, Va.

There is a big battle behind them for fourth and fifth place that involves four drivers. Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C. occupies fourth place but is only eight points ahead of fifth-place driver Terri Marks of Capron, Va. Marks’ margin over sixth-place Wesley Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. is a mere two points and her margin over seventh-place driver Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. is just four points. For more information about Saturday night’s Pabst Blue Ribbon racing program or South Boston Speedway’s 50th anniversary season, visit the speedway’s website at www.southbostonspeedway.com or phone the track at 434-572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540.
