NASCAR Whelen All-American Series News
Carlson Enjoys Chance To Stay Home And Chase National Title
Sep 18, 2007 - updated Sep 18th, 2007 10:19pm
Web posted by Jason Christley

Daytona Beach, Fla. --

For Immediate Release:Sept. 18, 2007

In NASCAR Whelen All-American Series

Steve Carlson has spent much of his life traveling a stock car racing circuit and winning championships. Now at 50 years of age, the Wisconsin driver is enjoying the opportunity to compete just down the street from his home in West Salem.

Don’t think for a moment, however, that Carlson is no longer a tough competitor or not hungry for another championship. He topped the late model class at his hometown track of LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway this season and leads the chase for the national championship in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

“What’s really neat about this is the race track is only five blocks from where I live,” Carlson said of LaCrosse Speedway. “We have traveled to California, Phoenix, Florida, Colorado and everywhere. It’s pretty neat that I can have as much fun as I’ve had racing just five blocks from home.”

Carlson was a five-time champion in the Midwest Series of NASCAR’s Elite Division between 1998 and 2003 and also won four championships in the predecessor to that series, the ARTGO Challenge Series, between 1990 and 1996.

“We’ve done a lot of traveling,” he recalled. “At this point in my career, I’d rather stay home or close to home. I’m past that traveling stage. We had a lot of fun doing it and won a lot of championships.”

With the 2007 season complete at LaCrosse Speedway, Carlson did a bit of traveling this past weekend. He headed to Elko (Minn.) Speedway, where he finished third and 13th in twin 40-lap feature races. Carlson leads the national standings with 862 points. He has eight wins, 19 top-five and 20 top-10 finishes.

Carlson attributes his success this season to his crew and car. “We had such a good car, it just made it easy really,” he said. “It was just one of those years, when everything was working out.”

Remaining second in the standings this week is Woody Pitkat of Manchester, Conn. Pitkat, who held the top ranking for much of this season, finished fourth at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway last Thursday and 10th at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway last Friday. Pitkat has accumulated 848 points – with seven wins, 24 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes this season.

Last year’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion, Philip Morris, is third in this week’s standings with 836 points. Morris of Ruckersville, Va., notched his 11th win of 2007, with a victory on Saturday at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va. In addition to his 11 wins, he has registered 18 top-five and 20 top-10 finishes this year.

Keith Rocco, who competes against Pitkat at Thompson Speedway and Stafford Speedway, remains fourth in the national standings with 818 points. In addition to Carlson, two other LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway competitors are in the top seven of the standings. Kevin Nuttleman is fifth with 800 points and Andy Burgess is seventh with 792 points. Sandwiched between the two in sixth, also with 792 points, is Joe Kosiski from I-80 Speedway in Nebraska. Fellow I-80 Speedway competitor Al Humphrey is eighth with 790 points. Completing the top 10 are Stafford racers Ted Christopher, with 782 points, and Kerry Malone, with 780 points.

Under the simplified point structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, the race winner will receive two points for every car in the event up to 25 cars. Second place will receive two fewer points, and so-on through the field. For example, if there are 25 cars, the winner receives 50 points, second gets 48 and third 46. If there are 15 cars, the winner receives 30 points, second gets 28 and third 26.

Competitors will count their 18 highest point finishes through Sept. 30. Once drivers surpass 18 starts, they are able to shed some of their sub-par finishes.

The national champion will earn a reserved spot in the 2007 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway in October.
