NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

After taking last weekend off to catch their collective breath, Langley Speedway's drivers and teams kick off the final month of the 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season this Saturday, Sept. 15, when the track plays host to Casey Cycle City Night.
This week's lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (100 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Cook's Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps); and, Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. and afternoon practice runs from 2 'til 4. The drivers meeting is slated for 4:15, followed by time trials at 4:30. During Saturday's pre-race festivities, which get under way at 6:30, race cars, trucks and karts will be lined up along the frontstretch and fans will be invited to come out on the track for an up-close look at the machines and to meet and greet their favorite drivers. The first feature contest gets the green flag at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

As we head into the last month of the 2007 season, let's take a quick look at the points leaders of Langley's various divisions and what they'll need to do to stay #1 in the title hunt:
• Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (4 races to go) - Danny Edwards holds a 26-point lead over Mark Wertz, 944-918. Wertz has finished ahead of Edwards in eight straight events, cutting Edwards' points lead from 56 to 26. Over the last four races, though, Edwards has managed to minimize the damage, coming home right behind Wertz and giving up only two points per race. For Edwards, four more finishes of fourth or better would be enough to net him a championship. He has posted top-four runs in 18 of 20 races this season.
• Dunkum's Machine Shop/Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks (2 races to go) - Langley veteran Paul Lubno holds a commanding 42-point edge over Danny Harrell, 450-408. Eleventh-place runs in the series' last two races will deliver the title to Lubno. The division will be in action on Sept. 22 and Oct. 6.
• B&C Seafood Modifieds (3 races to go) - Defending champ Shawn Balluzzo owns a 10-point lead over three-time race winner Joe Scarbrough, 328-318. Runner-up finishes in the remaining events would give Balluzzo his second consecutive Mod crown. He has finished first or second in five of seven races this season. The division's last three events are slated for Sept. 15, 22 and Oct. 6.
• Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets (1 race to go) - This one's pretty simple! With one race left, Steve Dill is two points ahead of Tommy Sweeney, 504-502. If Dill finishes ahead of, or no more than one position behind, Sweeney in the Sept. 29 series finale, then the title is his. If Sweeney is more than one spot ahead of Dill at the last checkered flag, he'll claim his second straight championship. If both Dill and Sweeney falter badly, third-place Ritchie German is lurking 32 points out of the lead.
• Cook's Moving Service Super Trucks (2 races to go) - Craig Firman is up by 38 points over Evan VanLeeuwen, 430-392. With a pair of 10th-place performances, Firman, the '05 UCAR champ, will claim the '07 Super Truck title. The division's last two events are slated for Sept. 15 and Oct. 6.
• Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (2 races to go) - Ryan Crites holds a 22-point advantage, 444-422, over Don McLaughlin and Jeremy Cook, who are deadlocked for second place. With two sixth-place runs (or better), the championship will belong to Crites. The Legends class wraps up with races on Sept. 22 and 29.
• E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (3 races to go) - Riding a wave of momentum following his victory in the 2006 Virginia State UCAR Championship, Kevin Alves won this season's first five races and hasn't looked back. He holds a 64-point lead over defending champ Randy Prillaman, 530-466, in the current standings. Alves will wrap up the championship with runs of 11th or better in the last three events, which are scheduled for Sept. 15, 29 and Oct. 6.
• Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (3 races to go) - Seven-time race winner Jeff Sampson is 20 points ahead of Randy Bradsher in the current rundown, 534-514, and will claim the '07 title by finishing fourth or better in the last three races. Those events are slated for Sept. 15, 22 and Oct. 6.
• Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (3 races to go) - Getting a handle on the Champs' points is a bit tricky. At the end of their season, each driver will get to drop his or her two worst outings from championship consideration. Also, the number of entries at each event is a factor in the number of points awarded. Having said that, David Phelps enjoys a firm grip on the series lead. The two dropped events may have the greatest impact on Cory Millard, second in the unadjusted standings. If the season ended now, she would drop to fourth, while Ryan Hudgins and Danny Wyatt would move up to second and third, respectively. The Champs will be in action on Sept. 15 and 29. They'll close out their '07 points campaign on Oct. 7, at one of the Hampton Roads Kart Club's regular Sunday afternoon events.

NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 22, with NAPA AutoCare Night at the Races. That evening's lineup includes: Late Models, Grand Stocks, Modifieds, INEX Legends, Wolf Trucks and MACKA Champ Karts.
