Two Division Titles Could be Decided Saturday At South Boston Speedway

South Boston, VA. --

Two division championships could be decided Saturday night when NASCAR racing returns to South Boston Speedway with the running of the Miss Utility 150 racing program.

The Miss Utility 150, the next-to-last points race of the season at South Boston Speedway, gets the green flag Saturday night at 7 p.m. Five races are scheduled as part of Saturday night’s Miss Utility 150 racing program with a 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division set as the featured event. Also scheduled as part of Saturday’s five-race program are races for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, the INEX Legends Cars Series and the Legendary Ford Flatheads Racing Association. Saturday’s Miss Utility 150 race-day schedule calls for pit gates open at 1 p.m. Practice will go from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Qualifying time trials start at 5:15 p.m. and the first race will start at 7 p.m.

Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. with the track’s Early Bird special admission of $8 for adults in effect until 6:30 p.m. Adult admission after that will be $10. Youths ages 10-15 will be admitted for $5. Kids ages 9 and under will be admitted free. With only two points races remaining on South Boston Speedway’s schedule including Saturday night’s Miss Utility 150 both the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division and the Limited Sportsman Division championships are all but decided. Heading into Saturday night’s 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division, division points leader and 10-time winner Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. is well in control of his own destiny. A win by Barker, who stands 52 points ahead of three-time winner Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. or a circumstance in which Barker finishes ahead of Ramsey will, for all practical purposes, seal the championship for Barker.

Ramsey has second place virtually assured to him as he stands 62 points ahead of third-place driver Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va. However, there could be movement among the remaining three drivers in the top five.

Johnson needs to have good finishes in the remaining two races as C.E. Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. is in fourth place, just 20 points behind Johnson. David Triplett Jr. of Timberlake, N.C. is fifth, just 16 points behind Falk and 36 points behind Johnson and could move up depending upon how circumstances play out in the final two races. In the Limited Sportsman Division, defending division champion Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. is virtually assured of a repeat title win.

Anderson, a 12-time winner in the division, holds a 66-point lead over Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. entering Saturday night’s action. With a win or a circumstance in which he finishes ahead of Willis, Anderson should be able to lock up the championship. While Anderson is in a solid position to win the championship, Willis still needs good finishes if he is going to secure the runner-up spot. Brian Pembleton of Amelia, Va. is in third place, 22 points down to Willis with two races to go. A tight four-way battle is in progress for fourth place between Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C., Terri Marks of Capron, Va., Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. and Wesley Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. With two races to go, there could be quite a shake-up in the bottom portion of the top five.

Still undecided are the titles of the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modified Division. Budweiser Pure Stock Division points leader Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C. has little breathing room in his quest for a second straight division title as Mark Francisco of Halifax, Va. has pulled to within 18 points with two points races left.

The title race in the Southern Vintage Modified Division is a very close one that won’t be decided until competitors take to the track for the final time on Saturday night, September 22, when South Boston Speedway holds its final points event of the season. Randy Smith of Bassett, Va. leads Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. by eight points and Donnie Lacks of Lynchburg, Va. trails Smith by 10 points heading into the division finale on September 22.
