Miller Runs Table In Macs Sanctioned Fall Classic 50 At Virginia Motor Speedway
Sep 18, 2005 - updated Sep 18th, 2005 2:06pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, Va. --

Saluda, VA – Jeremy Miller of Littlestown, PA ran the table by setting fast time, winning his heat, the dash and the $10,000 to win MACS sanctioned Fall Classic 50 presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway.

Miller took the lead on the drop of the green flag only to have the races first caution fall when Randle Chupp came to rest in turn 2 with a broken axle on the opening lap. On the restart Miller once again showed his dominance and jumped out to the lead.

By lap 4 Miller had built a 5-car length lead over Mike Balzano with Robbie Blair, Jack Pencil and Rod Conley in hot pursuit. On lap 6, twelfth starting Kenny Pettyjohn had worked his way past Conley for 5th on the high side. On lap 8 the battle for third heated up as Blair, Pencil and Pettyjohn went 3-wide out of turn 2 with Pencil coming out with the position and Pettyjohn following to fourth.

On lap 11 24th starting Ricky Elliott worked his way into 9th and looked to be faster than the leader at the time. On lap 14 the races second caution came out closing the field on Miller’s bumper for the restart. Miller chose the outside and on the drop of the green once again set out in the lead. On the restart nineteenth starting Bo Feathers took third from Pettyjohn and went directly after Balzano as the trio battle three wide. On lap 17 Elliott moved into fifth in a battle with Pencil. On lap 18 Elliott went after Pettyjohn for fourth and held the position briefly before Pettyjohn retook the spot in turn 3.

While they battled behind him, Miller worked traffic with easy and began to stretch out his lead. By lap 22 Miller held a 7-car length advantage as Feathers went to work on Balzano for second. The battle for the second spot was intense as Pettyjohn and Elliott joined in on a four-car battle for the spot. On lap 26 Pettyjohn went around the outside of Feathers for third. Feathers would give up and kept the pressure on as Pettyjohn pressured Balzano. Several times the battle for second went three wide and each time Balzano would hold ground.

On lap 30 Miller held a 10 car length lead over Balzano with Feathers, Pettyjohn and Elliott rounding out the top five with twenty laps to go. On lap 36 Feathers dove to the inside of Pettyjohn and pulled even as they exited turn 2. The two raced side by side for two laps before Feathers finally wrestled the spot away at the line on lap 38. With ten to go Miller still held a 10-car length advantage over the field. On lap 44 Elliott got under Pettyjohn in turn 2 only to give the spot back in turn 3.

With the laps winding down and Miller in control the race was for second as Feathers dove under Balzano in turn 3 but couldn’t take the position. Also on lap 47 Elliott pulled into the pits with mechanical problems ending his night. Miller cruised to the victory with Balzano holding off Feathers for second at the line.

“We just had a great car from start to finish tonight, we were able to stay ahead of the curve tonight and it paid off with the win,” commented Miller. “The track was just awesome tonight, I don’t think it has ever been better,” added Miller.

Rounding out the top five were Mike Balzano, nineteenth starting Bo Feathers, twelfth starting Kenny Pettyjohn, and Booper Bare who had to go to the rear of the field after visiting the pits during the races first caution with a flat tire.

In other action Ronald Cusic of Mechanicsville, MD picked up his third win of the season in the Victory Lap Late Models with a flag to flag victory in the 35-lap feature. Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, MD was crowned the 2005 Victory Lap Late Model Champion and will collect a $10,000 check at the awards banquet. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Donnie Owens jumped out to the lead on the drop of the green and led every lap on way to his first victory in three years. Bobby Bustamante of Chesapeake, VA was able to hold off Walker Arthur by six points to be crowned the 2005 Truckin Thunder Sportsman Champion.
