NEWS & NOTES:

DOWN TO THE WIRE: The championship battle in the Victory Lap Late Model division is going down to the last race of the season. On Saturday September 1st the championship race took a turn as 15 year old Austin Hubbard of Seaford, DE dominated Rd 4 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T for the victory while then point leader ‘The Faster Pastor” Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA had a night he would like to forget as he surrendered the point lead to the young upstart as they now head into the last point race of the season. Hubbard (1130 pts) holds an eight point advantage over Cohick (1122 pts) as the two get ready to go head to head for the title and the $10,000 that goes to the victor. Should both of Hubbard and Cohick stumble Stevie Long (1112 points) of Mechanicsville, MD is still in the hunt for the championship just 18 points our of the lead. Rounding out the top five are Brett Royal (1075 pts) of Owings, MD and Walker Arthur (1031 pts) of Forest, VA.

A TRUE SPORTSMAN: Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA is poised to do something rather rare this Saturday night win his third championship in a different division. Lipscombe has won championships in the All American and Charger divisions. Bidding to win his third championship, this one in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman divisions, Lipscombe (1130 pts) will take a 27 point advantage over defending champion Roger Jamerson (1260 pts) into this weekend’s action. Rounding out the top five are Tim Shelton (1214 pts) of Fredericksburg, VA, leading rookie candidate Michael Roop (1166 pts) of Stafford, VA and fellow rookie Kenny Moreland (1142 pts) of Waldorf, MD. The Sportsman rookie battle will be a good one Saturday as well as Roop holds a 24 point advantage of Moreland and 28 points over Robert Kramer (1138 pts).

MODIFIED MADNESS: It’s been a great year for the Budweiser Modified division as 42 different drivers have earned championship points. Looking to defend his championship and also win his third championship in the division is Bret Hamilton (1121 pts) of Powhatan, VA. Hamilton holds a 35 point advantage over leading rookie candidate Brian Maxey (1086 pts) of King George, VA. The battle for third is extremely tight with Mark Schools (1168 pts) of Midlothian, VA leading Brent Bordeaux (1165 pts) of Fredericksburg, VA by a mire three points. Eric Erwin (1029 pts) of Beaver Dam, VA rounds out the top five in points.

TERRY ON TOP: Bob Terry of Stafford, VA has been the proverbial bride’s maid, always coming up a bit short in the chase for the Charger Championship. This year the scenario is much different as Terry (1000 pts) take a 62 point lead into this weekend’s last point race over James Givens (944 pts) of New Kent, VA. Terry only needs to start the race to take home the championship. Rounding out the top five are John Kirby (936 pts) of Sandston, VA, Chris Tatum (891 pts) of Hanover, VA and Paul Bess (851 pts) of Quantico, VA.

TIGHT ALL AMERICAN BATTLE: Kevin Fletcher (1002 pts) of Saluda, VA is holding on to a very slim 17 point advantage over defending champion Marty Coltrain (985 pts) of Richmond, VA heading into this weekend’s last point race. Fletcher will have to keep Coltrain within sight if he is to take home the All American championship in only his first full season in the division. Rounding out the top five in points are Dustin Owens (916 pts) of North, VA, Stephen Childress (896 pts) of St. Stephens Church, VA and Chris Woods (792 pts) of Richmond, VA.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track affiliate, is a ½ mile dirt oval track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA in Jamaica, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
