South Boston Speedway News
Barker, Anderson Can Take Another Step Towards Division Titles In Saturday Night’s GCR 150
Aug 31, 2007 - updated Aug 31st, 2007 3:43pm

South Boston, VA. --

Two division points leaders here at South Boston Speedway, Adam Barker and Bruce Anderson, can take a major step towards securing championships when NASCAR racing action returns to South Boston Speedway Saturday night with the running of the GCR 150 racing program.

Saturday night’s racing action at South Boston Speedway gets underway at 7 p.m. with four races on tap on the GCR 150 event schedule. Headlining Saturday night’s GCR 150 racing program is a 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division. Also set as part of the Labor Day Weekend event are races for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, and the Southern Vintage Modified Division. Saturday’s race day schedule calls for pit gates open at 1 p.m. Practice will go from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Qualifying time trials start at 5:15 p.m. and the first race will start at 7 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. with the track’s Early Bird special admission of $8 for adults in effect until 6:30 p.m. Adult admission after that will be $10. Youths ages 10-15 will be admitted for $5. Kids ages 9 and under will be admitted free.

A 10-time winner here this season, Barker has built a 58-point lead over Ford driver Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. entering Saturday night’s action. Another win by Barker this weekend would give him a 60-point edge over Ramsey with two races remaining, a margin that would be all but impossible for Ramsey to erase unless Barker encountered a total disaster in both of the last two races. Behind Ramsey is a much closer battle for the remainder of the top five spots. Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va. enters Saturday night’s action in third place in the standings but he holds a narrow 16-point edge over C.E. Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. David Triplett of Timberlake, N.C. rounds out the top five in the standings but is only 14 points behind Falk. With the closeness of the competition among those drivers there is a possibility that those spots could be swapped around by the time the final points race of the season is done.

In the Limited Sportsman Division, Anderson, the division points leader, has every bit as secure position as Barker. Anderson, with 11 wins, leads Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. by 64 points entering Saturday night’s GCR 150 racing program. Like Barker, a win Saturday night should all but lock up what would be a second straight Limited Sportsman Division title for Anderson. Behind Anderson there is a big battle going on for second through fifth place. Amelia, Va. resident Brian Pembleton holds down third place and trails Willis by only 16 points. Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. is in fourth place well behind Pembleton but he is only two points ahead of Terri Marks of Capron, Va., who drives a Chevrolet maintained by the students and instructors of the Halifax County Motorsports Academy, who stands in fifth place. Wesley Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. and Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C. are tied for sixth place but are only two points behind Marks and are only four points down to Langford, the fourth-place driver.

Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C., continues to lead the Budweiser Pure Stock Division points standings. Watkins, who is seeking a second straight Pure Stock Division title, holds a 24-point lead over Mark Francisco of Halifax, Va. William Ridgeway of Burlington, N.C., is in third place, 18 points behind Francisco. Six-time winner Joey Throckmorton of Scottsburg, Va., is in fourth place, 22 points down to Ridgeway and Quain Moore of Callands, Va. rounds out the top five in the standings, trailing Throckmorton by four points.

The championship in the Southern Vintage Modified Division is still very much up for grabs. Randy Smith of Bassett, Va., a four-time winner, holds a slim two-point lead over Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. Lynchburg, Va. area resident Donnie Lacks sits in third place, eight points out of the lead.
