NEWS & NOTES:

STILL TIGHT IN LATE MODELS: The ‘Faster Pastor’ Tom Cohick (956) of Gloucester, VA continues to hold a slight advantage over Austin Hubbard (946) of Seaford, DE in the Victory Lap Late Model points chase. Rounding out the top five are Stevie Long (916) of Mechanicsville, MD, Brett Royal (878) of Owings, MD and Walker Arthur (855) of Forest, VA.

FIRST TIME WNNER: Sommey Lacey of Clements, MD finally scored his first Victory Lap Late Model win at VMS. Lacey has been a consistent competitor but had yet to break into victory lane. The win didn’t come easy as he battled tooth and nail with Louis Timberlake of Mechanicsville, VA for the win. The second place finish was Timberlake’s career best in the late model division.

PERFECT NO MORE: Craig Folmar’s streak of six consecutive wins has been broken! Two weeks ago Mary Anne Williams of Chester, VA put down a flawless run and picked up the victory over newcomer Randy Kaylor of Manheim, PA; Phillipsburg, PA’s Folmar finished third. The points chase tightened up just a bit as well as Flomar’s hold on the top spot is now just 21 points over Williams (695) heading into this weekend’s action. Rounding out the top five in New Generation Racing Sprint Car points are rookie Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC, Michael Tolley (555) of Ashland, VA and Eric Keck (540) of Providence Forge, VA.

IN COMMAND: With only three Truckin Thunder Sportsman point races left Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA continues to lead the division’s point race over Roger Jamerson (1058) of Glen Allen, VA. The 37 point advantage is the largest of any divisional leader. The lead is by no means safe and Lipscombe will have to be very careful over the next three point paying events. Rounding out the top five are Tim Shelton (1035) of Fredericksburg, VA, rookie Michael Roop (998) of Stafford, VA and rookie Robert Kramer (982) of Waldorf, MD.

THE BEAT GOES ON: Bob Terry of Stafford, VA continues in his quest to take home the Charger title. With a victory in last weekend’s action Terry is also in the hunt for the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship. With his latest victory Terry ties Craig Folmar in the New Generation Racing Sprint Car division with the most wins – six. Terry also extended his lead in the points back to 46 points over James Givens (762) of New Kent, VA who takes over the second spot from John Kirby (760) of Sandston, VA; Chris Tatum (706) of Hanover, VA and Mechanicsville, VA’s Mark Wright (686) round out the top five.

GOIN’ FOR FOUR: Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA is sitting in a very familiar spot, atop the Budweiser Modified points race, as he continues to lead the division with a 27 point advantage over rookie Brian Maxey (919) of King George, VA. Hamilton is trying to win his fourth modified title at VMS. The only other driver to win a championship in the division’s five year existence is 2005 Champion Page Harrison of Jetersville, VA. With three point races left it will be paramount for Hamilton to continue to keep Maxey and the rest of the top five in his sites. Rounding out the top five behind Hamilton and Maxey are Mark Schools (902) of Midlothian, VA, Brent Bordeaux (872) of Fredericksburg, VA and Harrison (861). The division has had 42 drivers score at least one point in competition.

IN CONTROL: Kevin Fletcher of Saluda, VA is breathing a little easier of late as he continues to lead the All American division in points. Fletcher holds a slim 17 point advantage over defending champion Marty Coltrain (985) of Richmond, VA. The race for the championship will come down to the division’s last point race of the season on September 15th. Rounding out the top five are Dustin Owens (916) of North, VA, Stephen Childress (896) of St. Stephens Church, VA and Chris Woods (792) of Richmond, VA.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, a ASA Member Track Affiliate, is a ½ mile dirt oval track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA in Jamaica, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
