NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Update: Racing, music fill the bill for Saturday's A.V.E.S. Night show Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007

An evening of country music and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action is planned for this Saturday, Aug. 25, as Langley Speedway plays host to Moody's All Virginia Environmental Solutions Night.

The feature lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Dunkum's Machine Shop/Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks (40 laps); Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (25 laps); and, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice gets rolling at 2 and wraps up at 4. The drivers meeting is slated for 4:15, followed by time trials at 4:30. Pre-race festivities begin at 6 with a concert by local country singer/songwriter Nate Sparks and a demonstration of high-flying R/C vehicles from Hobbytown USA. After the invocation and national anthem, the first feature race goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly "test and tune" session on Thursday, Aug. 23. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week's session.

Weather permitting, the Speedway's "Wild Wacky Wednesday" schedule continues tonight. The program includes "Time Attacks" (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

Philip Morris has been joined by fellow Motor Mile Speedway pilot Jerame Donley at the head of NASCAR's latest Virginia state championship standings. Langley regular Greg Edwards, who was the runner-up in last Saturday's Late Model Stock Car race at South Boston Speedway, slipped to third in the rundown. Langley Late Model points leader Danny Edwards held onto the fourth spot, while Mark Wertz dropped from fifth to seventh.
In the hunt for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship, Woody Pitkat of Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn., remains the leader. Morris, the defending titleholder, leaped from 10th to second and is in a much better position to gain points over the final month of the season.
In determining the state/provincial and national champions, NASCAR will consider each driver's 18 best finishes (in terms of the number of points received). Pitkat has posted 19 top-five performances, so any gains he makes in the next few weeks would likely be small. Morris, on the other hand, has posted 15 top-fives, leaving him more room for improvement. Only 120 points separate first-place Pitkat and 10th-place Randy Porter.
Langley drivers in the national top 500 rankings include: Greg Edwards (39th), Danny Edwards (49th), Mark Wertz (67th), Shawn Balluzzo (108th), Jeff Shiflett (158th), Dean Shiflett (293rd), Craig Eastep (400th), Jeff Sampson (402nd), Anthony Warren (404th) and Ross Clements (468th).

Cory Millard picked up her first victory as the Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts held their eighth event of the season during last Sunday's regular Hampton Roads Kart Club meet at the Speedway.
The complete finishing order was: 1. Cory Millard; 2. David Phelps; 3. Greg Shaffer; 4. Joshua Harris; 5. Danny Wyatt; 6. Ryan Hudgins; 7. Jeremy Grogg; 8. Spencer Saunders; 9. Jordan Wood; 10. Bobby Peach; 11. David Srednicki; 12. Phillip Clarke; 13. Jason Houck; 14. Daniel Millard; 15. Dennis Nash; 16. Eddie Mitchell; 17. Ken Tellez; 18. Chris O'Brien; 19. Adam Chalkley; 20. Casey Wyatt; 21. Greg Burgess Jr.

With five straight top-four finishes, including one win, Ryan Crites has crept to within four points of Jeremy Cook for the lead in the INEX Legends division. After a win in the season opener, Crites struggled in the next two events, coming home 12th on May 12 and 10th on June 2. Since then, though, he has become a fixture near the front of the field to battle back into title contention.
• • •
When Tommy Sweeney and one of his rear wheels parted company off Turn 4 on the last lap of last Saturday's Super Street race, it dropped him to a 13th-place finish and halted a remarkable streak. Coming into last weekend's event, Sweeney had finished in the top three in 21 straight Super Street races. The last time he had failed to produce a podium performance was Aug. 27, 2005.
• • •
Last week's "Track-A-Thon," led by the Rev. Tom Potter, Langley Speedway's chaplain, raised over $9,500 for the Victory Junction Gang Camp.
• • •
For drivers and teams interested in competing in Langley's big Oct. 13 program, which will include UCARs, HRKC and MACKA Champ Karts, the Pro 6 Series and Wolf Trucks, complete event information has been posted on the Speedway's Web site - www.langley-speedway.com.

NASCAR racing continues at Langley Speedway next Saturday, Sept. 1, when the track hosts Nextel Night. That evening's feature slate includes: Late Models, B&C Seafood Modifieds, Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets, INEX Legends and HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.
As has become customary, the Speedway will take a night off on Saturday, Sept. 8, in deference to NASCAR Nextel Cup activities at Richmond International Raceway.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
