Kenly, NC --
JR Motorsports has been a mainstay at Southern National Raceway Park this season. This Saturday, they were a mainstay in victory lane, taking both Kinston Automotive Late Model events. In the first of two Late Model events, outside row one starter Corey Strickland dominated the first 56 laps and looked to be well on his way to his second victory of 2007. Scott Young made contact with point-leader Drew Herring, spinning Herring and bringing out the caution. Under the lap 56 caution, Strickland’s engine stalled out, moving Young to the front. From there it was Young holding off a hard-charging Derek Lee, and leading the final 19 laps to take his second victory of the season. Lee would hang on for second, with Curtis Truex Jr., Sherman Davis Jr. and Thomas Burbage rounding out the top five.
The second Late Model race was entirely a two-car battle for the lead between pole-sitter Sherman Davis Jr. and Curtis Truex Jr. Davis Jr. would lead the first 37 laps, but would eventually cave to pressure from Truex. Truex would pull away, finishing two seconds ahead of second place Davis. Joey Colter held onto third despite the best efforts of fourth place Jamey Caudill, who was involved in the previous race’s accident with Herring and Young. Herring would finish fifth in a backup car that had not seen the track in weeks.
Despite what could be summed up as a long night for himself, Drew Herring holds the points lead going into the Southern National Raceway Park Championship Series that will kick off Labor Day weekend. Curtis Truex Jr. is second, with Jamey Caudill, Scott Young and Deac McCaskill rounding out the top five.
In Limited Late Models, Daniel Watkins III would lead from wire to wire in an accident-marred 50 lap event. A lap 38 incident involving Ron Langley, PJ Flowers, Billy Corey, Brandon Hobbs and points leader Lance West led to a 15 minute red flag. Afterwards, Douglas Barefoot held off Tom Holland for second, with Holland finishing a season-best third. Melvin Langley finished fourth, with points leader Lance West getting back on the track after his wreck and managing fifth.
In Street Stocks, Donald Chase would lead from wire to wire but failed post race inspection. The DQ gives Greg Barnette his fifth win of 2007. Points leader Kevin Benton would finish second, only feet behind Barnette, and Terry Lancaster finished third.
Greg Whitley continued his recent domination of the 4 Cylinder class, winning his seventh race of the season. Lee Kozikowski finished second, with Kenny Johnson taking advantage of a turn four spin on the last lap by Justin Gill and Jeremy Bohne to finish third.
Russell Din made a late pass on Forrest Tanner Jr. to take the checkered flag in the Papa Jacks Stores Thunder Car division. Ashley Smith continued her winning ways in UCARs, fending off Wayne Boone, and Kyle Bonsignoro held off Rick Fedrezzi to win in the USAC Ford Focus Midget division.
Southern National Raceway Park has next week off in preparation for the SNRP Championship Series, but will return on September 1 with a full night of racing. The Labor Day weekend event will feature twin 75 lap races from the Kinston Automotive Late Models, as well as racing from the Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, Papa Jacks Stores Thunder Cars, and UCARs. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for kids 8-17, and free for children 7 and under. As always, all military personnel admission is $13 with a valid military ID. September 1 is also Southern National Church Youth Group night.
