Hampton, VA --

LFCU Night, Annual "Track-A-Thon" set for Saturday

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

With pleasant weather in the forecast, a large crowd is expected to pack Langley Speedway this Saturday, Aug. 18, for Langley Federal Credit Union Night at the Races, the 18th event on the track's 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule.

Saturday's feature lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets (50 laps); Cook's Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps).

Gates open at 1 p.m. and afternoon practice rounds run from 2 'til 4. After the 4:15 drivers meeting, qualifying begins at 4:30.
This week's pre-race activities get under way at 6:30 and include the annual "Track-A-Thon" to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp - a favorite charity at Langley Speedway and throughout the entire NASCAR family. Led by the Rev. Tom Potter, Langley's track chaplain, sponsored participants will make two laps around the Speedway. Any non-motorized means of conveyance is permitted (i.e. walking, running, biking, roller-blading, wheelchairs, etc.).
Following a pleasant jaunt around the track, fans will settle in for an evening of racing action. The first feature event gets the green flag at 7.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly "test and tune" session on Thursday, Aug. 16. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week's session.

The Speedway's "Wild Wacky Wednesday" schedule continues tonight. The program includes "Time Attacks" (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford and Langley regular Greg Edwards rank first and second, respectively, in NASCAR's latest Virginia state championship standings. With about a month and a half to go in the season, Morris holds a commanding 140-point edge over Edwards, 698-558. Jerame Donley of Motor Mile has moved up to third, 152 points behind the leader. Langley drivers Danny Edwards and Mark Wertz are fourth and fifth in the current rundown.

In the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national title chase, Woody Pitkat of Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn., continues to show the way. He is 70 points ahead of fellow Stafford driver Keith Rocco. Morris, the defending national champ, checked in at 10th this week.
Local drivers in the national top 500 include: Greg Edwards (41st), Danny Edwards (55th), Mark Wertz (69th), Shawn Balluzzo (110th), Jeff Shiflett (152nd), Dean Shiflett (281st), Anthony Warren (371st), Jeff Sampson (380th), Craig Eastep (419th) and Ross Clements (474th).

The Dominion Derby Girls, an all-female roller derby team based in Hampton Roads, will be on hand for this Saturday's pre-race activities.
• • •
The starting lineups for Saturday's races will be determined solely by time trials. No driver comes into this weekend on a two-race winning streak, so no one will have to retreat to the eighth starting spot.
• • •
Wolf Trucks and the Pro 6 Series have been added to the Speedway's Oct. 13 program, which will be headlined by the Second Annual Virginia State UCAR Championship and the Inaugural King of Champ Karts race.
This season's big UCAR event will be a 75-lapper, up from 50 a year ago, and will pay $1,000 to win. The Wolf Truckers and Pro Sixers will each run a 40-lap race.
The Champ Kart portion of the program will feature 20-lappers for the HRKC and MACKA organizations. The top 12 finishers from those two races will advance to the 20-lap main event, which will determine the King (or Queen) of Champ Karts.
General admission tickets for Oct. 13 are attractively priced at only $5 for adults and kids, 6-12. "Little Race Fans," under 6, are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Complete details about the Oct. 13 program will be released soon.
• • •
NASCAR racing action continues next Saturday, Aug. 25, when Langley Speedway plays host to All Virginia Environmental Solutions (A.V.E.S.) Night. That evening's feature slate includes: Late Models, Dunkum's Machine Shop/Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends and Wolf Trucks.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
