South Boston Speedway To Celebrate Its 50th Anniversary This Weekend

The crescendo that has been building all year towards South Boston Speedway’s 50th anniversary celebration will reach its peak this weekend. South Boston Speedway, which opened on the first weekend in August, 1957, will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary with two nights of activity and festivities that will include Saturday night’s 7 p.m. running of the Halifax County Tourism 150 Presented By Berry Hill Estate.

South Boston Speedway fans will want to bring their autograph books with them to Friday’s night’s 50th Anniversary Reunion, which will bring together a number of South Boston Speedway’s past champions and legendary drivers. As part of Friday night’s 50th Anniversary Reunion, four of South Boston Speedway’s past champions, Barry Beggarly, David Blankenship, Roy Hendrick and Wayne Patterson will take to the track to compete in a special match race. Gates will open Friday at 5 p.m.with the start of an autograph session featuring the track’s past champions and legendary drivers that will be on hand.

Pre-race ceremonies will start at 7 p.m. and racing starts at 8 p.m. Admission for Friday night’s 50th Anniversary Reunion will be $5. On Saturday night, NASCAR racing resumes at South Boston Speedway with the running of the Halifax County Tourism 150 Presented By Berry Hill Estate. Saturday night’s Halifax County Tourism 150 Presented By Berry Hill Estate racing program will include five races with the first race getting the green flag at 7 p.m. The five-race program will be highlighted by a 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division. Also on tap are races for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, the regional touring Southern Vintage Modified Division and the Grand Stock Division. Gates will open at 5 p.m., qualifying time trials will start at 5:15 p.m. and the first race will start at 7 p.m. South Boston Speedway’s Early Bird Special $8 admission for adults will be in effect until 6:30 p.m. with admission being $10 after that. Youths ages 10-15 will be admitted for $5. Kids ages nine and under will be admitted free.

Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. leads the points standings in the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division and holds a 62-point edge over Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va. is in third place, four points ahead of C.E. Falk of Virginia Beach. David Triplett Jr. of Timberlake, N.C. rounds out the top five drivers with Triplett standing 20 points behind Falk. Defending Limited Sportsman Division champion Bruce Anderson of South Boston holds a 60-point edge over Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. in the Limited Sportsman Division points standings. The defending Budweiser Pure Stock Division champion, Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C., leads the division standings entering Saturday night’s action. Watkins holds a 28-point edge over Mark Francisco of Halifax, Va.

There is a close three-way battle for the top spot in the points standings in the Southern Vintage Modified Division. Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. leads Randy Smith of Bassett, Va. by a slim two- point margin with Lynchburg, Va. area resident Donnie Lacks sitting in third place just eight points out of the lead.
