Herring Sweeps at SNRP
Aug 13, 2007 - updated Aug 13th, 2007 10:00am
Web posted by Ken Childs

Kenly, NC --

Drew Herring took over the points lead two weeks ago with a win and second place finish. Saturday night, he made it known that he wasn’t looking back. In the first of two Kinston Automotive Late Model races, Mooresville’s Scott Young took the pole and led the first five laps before falling victim to Herring and his Bailey’s Chevy Monte Carlo. Herring’s strong car, plus only one caution (lap 28 for Randy Renfrow coming to a stop in turn four), allowed Herring to stay away the field and lead the final 70 laps. Jamey Caudill, Young, Curtis Truex Jr. and Corey Strickland rounded out the top five.

After a six car invert for the second race, Herring made quick work of the field, passing pole sitter Adam Murray on lap four and leading the final 71 laps with only minimal challenge from the field. A lap 72 caution allowed second place finisher Curtis Truex Jr. one last attempt at Herring, but it was Drew Herring’s night. Truex Jr. would hold on for second, with Caudill, Young and Strickland rounding out the top five.

Drew Herring’s big night gives him a 180 point lead on second place Curtis Truex Jr. Jamey Caudill is third, only two points behind Truex. Scott Young is fourth, with Deac McCaskill in fifth. McCaskill suffered from engine troubles all night, relegating him to eleventh and tenth place finishes, respectively.

In Limited Late Models, Gary Davis Jr. took the pole and led from wire to wire despite the best efforts of Daniel Watkins III. Watkins got as close as the rear fender of Davis before getting loose on lap 22 and sliding up the track. From there, Davis put together a solid run and held off another late charge by Watkins. Lance West, PJ Flowers and Brandon Hobbs filled out the top five. Despite the third place finish, West extends his lead to 305 points over second place PJ Flowers.

In Street Stocks, Greg Barnette led the first 20 laps of the 25 lap event before breaking a spindle. Kevin Benton was the beneficiary, leading the last five laps to win his fourth race of 2007 and extending his point lead to 41 points. Timothy Watkins and Duane Walker finished second and third, respectively.

Ed Little Jr. had led the first 23 laps of the 4 Cylinder race. After a caution for fluid on the track, Little missed a shift on the restart and point leader Greg Whitley took over, leading the last two laps to win his sixth race of 2007. Justin Gill held off Ed Little Jr. to take second (a career best), with Little finishing third.

In UCARs, Wayne Boone led all but the final two laps, eventually being beaten by Ashley Smith, who won her seventh race of 2007. Boone made a late attempt to get back past Smith, but would have to settle for second. Daniel Tugwell finished third.

Billy Gomez Jr. held off William “Sparky” West and Frank Morgan to win his third INEX Legends race in a row. Jimmy Horner made a late pass to win the V6 UCAR event, beating Justin Marshburn and Paul Leadford.

Racing returns to the high banks of Southern National Raceway Park this Saturday, August 18th with a full night of racing. Saturday night will be the final night before the SNRP Championship Series, and teams will be jockeying for position. The night’s action will feature twin 75 lap races for the Kinston Automotive Late Models, as well as the Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, Papa Jacks Stores Thunder Cars, and UCARs. The night will also feature 30 laps from the Carolina USAC Ford Focus Midget series.

Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for youths 8-17, and free for children 7 and under. Military personnel is $13 with valid military ID. For more information contact the track office at (919) 284-1114, or surf over to http://www.southernnational.net.
