Close Competition Expected In Saturday’s Miller Lite 250 Presented by Halifax County Tourism
Aug 9, 2007 - updated Aug 9th, 2007 9:15pm
Web posted by

South Boston, VA. --

The level of the competition in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series has traditionally been very high and that trend has continued throughout the 2007 season.

That’s one of the primary reasons racing fans have become attracted to the touring national stock car racing series in increasing numbers over the years. The same intense competition is expected at South Boston Speedway for Saturday night’s 7 p.m. running of the Miller Lite 250 presented by Halifax County Tourism USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Sears Auto Center Northern Division race.

Saturday night’s 250-lap, 100-mile USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series race will be the featured event of a two-race program that will also include a 150-lap race for South Boston Speedway’s Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division.

Advance adult general admission tickets are priced at $15 each and may be purchased until 5 p.m. Friday, August 10. Fans wishing to obtain advance tickets may do so at the speedway office between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day now through Friday or telephone the speedway at 434-572-4947 or 1-877-440-1540. Adult general admission tickets will be $20 each on race day when grandstand gates open and ticket sales start at 3 p.m. Tickets for youths ages 10-15 are priced at $10 each. Youngsters age nine and under will be admitted free with a paid adult.

Entering Saturday night’s Miller Lite 250 presented by Halifax County Tourism, there have been only two repeat winners in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series – Mark McFarland and Michael Ritch – a fact that demonstrates just how tough the competition is week in and week out in the series. Saturday night’s Miller Lite 250 presented by Halifax County Tourism is the final race of the regular season for the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Sears Auto Center Northern Division and, as such, will be the race that will determine the Northern Division championship. Gary St. Amant of Delaware, Ohio will bring a 65-point lead over defending Northern Division champion Benny Gordon of DuBois, Pa. into Saturday night’s 250-lap event. If Amant finishes eighth or better, he can clinch the Northern Division crown regardless of what Gordon does.

However, if Gordon wins the race, leads the race at halfway and leads the most laps and Amant finishes outside of the top eight, Gordon can win the championship. There is a similarly tight battle for Rookie of the Year honors heading into Saturday night’s race with Brandon Ward of Winston- Salem, N.C. poised at the top of the field of rookies battling for the honor. While those three drivers will bear watching, South Boston Speedway fans will have several other familiar faces to watch and keep track of as well.

Among that group is former South Boston Speedway NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division regular Woody Howard of Chesapeake, Va. Other drivers that have competed at South Boston Speedway in the Late Model Stock Car Division in the past include, Johnny Rumley of Summerfield, N.C., Jeff Agnew of Floyd, Va., and Carl Long of Troutman, N.C. Following the Miller Lite 250, the competitors in South Boston Speedway’s Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division will take the track for a 150-lap race. Last week division points leader Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. hit the double-digit mark in the win column with his tenth win of the season and he will be looking to make it number 11 this weekend. Barker, who holds a comfortable 58-point lead over Ford driver Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. going into Saturday night’s event, has won the last two races and will be looking to up his streak to three wins in a row.

A close battle is waging for third through fifth place in the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division points standings. C.E. Falk III of Virginia Beach, Va. is holding down third place and stands just 10 points ahead of Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va. and David Triplett Jr. of Timberlake, N.C. who are tied for fourth place.

Saturday’s race day schedule has USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series practice going from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. with Late Model Stock Car Division practice going from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Qualifying time trials for the Late Model Stock Car Division will start at 3:30 p.m. with USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series qualifying set to start at 4:30 p.m.

A Fan Appreciation event during which time fans will be able to go onto the track to see the cars, meet the drivers and get autographs will start at 5:45 p.m. The Miller Lite 250 presented by Halifax County Tourism will start at 7 p.m. For more information about the Miller Lite 250 presented by Halifax County Tourism or South Boston Speedway’s 50th anniversary season, visit the speedway’s website at www.southbostonspeedway.com or telephone the speedway at 434-572-4947 or 1-877-440-1540.
