JR Motorsports Considers First Busch Race a Success

Homestead-Miami Speedway/Homest --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NAVY driver brimming with confidence after finishing 20th

Homestead, Fl (November 18, 2005) – It is safe to say that Mark McFarland opened a few eyes in what was to be a tune-up for a full 2006 NASCAR Busch Series season.

Needing to make the field for the Ford 300 to assure himself eligibility for the 2006 season opener in Daytona, McFarland qualified his No. 88 U.S. Navy Chevrolet 18th and brought it home in a respectable 20th place. Ryan Newman took the checkered flag and McFarland’s fellow DMP constituent, Martin Truex, Jr., captured his second consecutive Busch Series championship.

Even though it is called the off-season for a reason, it will be more like game on around the JR Motorsports shop until February rolls around. Much work lies ahead, but the success of Saturday night shows that JR Motorsports and the U.S. Navy are poised to make waves in 2006.

Mark on what feel he got from the car during the race:

“We knew we had to make the race on time so we really didn’t practice any race runs during practice and we ended up struggling to find the balance during the race. It was too tight, then too loose, but the track has so many lines you can drive to help the car when it is not handling exactly right. It may sound crazy, but the Busch cars really do drive similarly to the Hooters Pro Cup cars that I have been driving this year.”

“Ken Schrader’s truck team brought the car down for us and crewed the car all weekend and I can’t thank them enough for all the hard work they put in. Our Richard Childress Racing motor was awesome, had plenty of horsepower. We definitely have some things to work on during the off-season, but we also have some things to be excited about.”

Started: 18th

Finished: 20th

Mark on what learning experiences he can take from Homestead:

“I learned how I can expect to be raced by some guys and who I can feel comfortable around and I’m sure they did the same thing with me.”

But the main thing I learned from this weekend is how great a sponsor we have in the NAVY. Obviously when you represent the U.S. Navy you are representing 350,000 individuals who work together as a team and if they can do that, they can sure be an asset to any race team. We had two admirals at the track today and they were both excited to be there and excited about our 2006 season together.”

Dale Jr. on the first run for his new Busch team:

“Mark drove a very smart race and everyone did an excellent job this weekend. Everyone knew the things that they need to work on and I’m sure everything will be running smoothly by Daytona. But I honestly couldn’t be happier for our first run.”

A Major Help: T.J. Majors, who used to drive the JR Motorsports’ late model stock car and now works for MB2 Racing, helped out by spotting for Mark during the race. Majors was on loan from the U.S. Army team to spot for the U.S. Navy team. His nickname, seriously, is the General.

Passing the Torch: In one of those strange NASCAR circumstances that have no explanation, former NAVY driver David Stremme and McFarland we paired together during the parade lap that follows driver introductions. It was because they qualified next to each other but it made for a perfect photo opportunity.
