Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

A six-race slate is planned for this Saturday, Aug. 4, at Langley Speedway, as the Hampton Roads Toyota Dealers Association and Coca-Cola team up to present an evening of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action.
Saturday’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets (50 laps); Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps); Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps); and, in their final appearance at Langley this season, the Pro 6 Series (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice rounds begin at 2 and wrap up at 4. The drivers meeting is scheduled for 4:15, followed by time trials at 4:30. Pre-race ceremonies start at 6:55 and the first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session on Thursday, Aug. 2. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

The Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesday” schedule continues on August 8. The program includes “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford widened his lead in NASCAR’s latest Virginia state championship points rundown. With 562 points, Morris is 40 ahead of Langley regular Greg Edwards. Two more Langley veterans, Danny Edwards and Mark Wertz, are third and fourth in the current standings, while Shawn Balluzzo ranks ninth.
In the national title hunt, Woody Pitkat of Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn., sits atop the leaderboard for a second straight week. He holds a commanding 86-point lead over former national champ Joe Kosiski of I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb. Canadian drivers Guy Jubinville and Jean Francois Bouvrette of Autodrome St. Eustache in St. Eustache, Quebec, who have ranked at or near the top of the standings all season, were both idle last weekend and slipped from second and third to seventh and 10th, respectively.
Langley drivers in the national top 500 include: Greg Edwards (36th), Danny Edwards (54th), Mark Wertz (70th), Shawn Balluzzo (104th), Jeff Shiflett (140th), Dean Shiflett (280th), Anthony Warren (301st), Jeff Sampson (333rd), Craig Eastep (400th) and Ross Clements (456th).
Each driver’s best 18 finishes (based on the number of points received) will be considered by NASCAR in determining the state/provincial and national championships. The NASCAR points season runs through the end of September.
