Jamaica, VA. --

Persistent showers and lightning forced officials of Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway to cancel the scheduled WFLS Night at the Races presented by Lipscombe Home Furnishings on Saturday night.

“It is very disheartening to have to cancel tonight’s racing program, we tried waiting out the storm but it rained too much to get the track back in racing condition in a reasonable timeframe,” commented Track General Manager Clarke Sawyer.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will return to action Saturday, August 4th to host Round 3 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T. The night’s action will also feature the Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modifieds, Chargers and All Americans in action.

Competitor gates for Saturday, August 4th will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30pm with hot laps. Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday, August 4th: Victory Lap Late Models (40 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (30 Laps); Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps); VMS Chargers (25 Laps); and VMS All Americans (15 Laps). NEWS & NOTES:

THE ‘FASTER PASTOR” EXTENDS HIS POINTS LEAD: Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA extended his current points lead in the Victory Lap Late Model division by picking up his fourth victory of the season two weekends ago. Cohick now holds a 21 point advantage over 15 year old Austin Hubbard (748) of Seaford, DE; Stevie Long (733) of Mechanicsville, MD, Brett Royal (702) of Owings, MD and Walker Arthur (673) of Forest, VA round out the top five. This week Cohick will try to derail the chances of Roland Mann and Neil McClanan winning any bonus monies by winning round 3 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T.

LIPSCOMBE LEADS POINTS WITH CONSISTENCY: Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA has yet to visit victory lane in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman but consistency has him atop the point standings heading into this weekends action. Lipscombe has the best average finish of any Sportsman driver with a 4.11 average finish. Lipscombe has come close to getting his career first Sportsman win but misfortune always seems to derail chances. Lipscombe currently holds a 42 point advantage over Roger Jamerson (851) of Glen Allen, VA. Rounding out the top five are Tim Shelton (837) of Fredericksburg, VA, Michael Roop (823) of Stafford, VA and Robert Kramer (802) of Waldorf, MD.

MODIFIED ROOKIE MAKING WAVES: Brian Maxey of King George, VA might be soft spoken off the track but on the track the leading Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Year candidate is letting his racing speak loudly for him. Maxey comes off his career first Budweiser Modified victory and vaulted himself into second in the divisions point race, 29 points behind defending Champion Bret Hamilton (681) of Powhatan, VA. Rounding out the top five in points are Mark Schools (650) of Midlothian, VA, Brent Bordeaux (625) of Fredericksburg, VA and 2005 Champion Page Harrison (615) of Jetersville, VA.

BRIDESMAID NO MORE: Bob Terry of Stafford, VA has been the proverbial bridesmaid in the Charger division, this year Terry has his eyes set squarely on the top prize… the 2007 Charger Championship. Terry has already eclipsed his 2006 total for wins with four already to his credit and looks to be the odds on favorite in the championship chase. Terry leads Sandston, VA’s John Kirby (570) by 46 markers as they head into this weekend’s action. Rounding out the top five are James Givens (566) of New Kent, VA, leading rookie contender Kyle Nelson (554) of Mechanicsville, MD and Chris Tatum (537) of Hanover, VA.

FLETCHER FLYING HIGH: Kevin Fletcher of Saluda, VA is in his first full year is opening a lot of eyes with his steady runs that have him atop the point standings. Fletcher has two wins to his credit and leads the points battle by 13 points over defending champion Marty Coltrain (788) of Richmond, VA. Rounding out the top five in points are Stephen Childress (743) of St. Stephens, VA, Dustin Owens (716) of North, VA and David Bowler (652) of Gloucester, VA.
