McCaskill Has Top-15 Run Cut Short in Late Race Wreck in Busch Debut at ORP
Jul 30, 2007 - updated Jul 30th, 2007 4:41pm
Web posted by Sara Gonlag

Indianapolis --

(July 29, 2007)

Deac McCaskill made his first career NASCAR Busch Series start driving the Evernham Motorsports Dodge Charger at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Practice throughout Saturday was focused on consistency and learning the track. By the end of final practice McCaskill posted the eighth fastest lap time, but due to a spin during his first lap of qualifying, McCaskill started the No. 9 Puryear Tanklines Dodge Charger from the rear of the field.

Six laps into the race, McCaskill climbed his way up to 23rd but was fighting a loose condition. When the caution came out on lap 13, the Puryear Tanklines Dodge Charger stayed out with the rest of the field. McCaskill felt confident that he could hang onto the loose racecar until they could come in for adjustments.

Restarting in 25th, McCaskill fell back two positions before the second caution of the night on lap 43. Team director, Mike Shiplett, called McCaskill down pit road for four tires and a trackbar adjustment. Despite being McCaskill’s first ever pit stop, the team made up one position on pit road and restarted in 24th. Adjustments to the No. 9 helped with the loose condition but on lap 57, McCaskill reported that the car was becoming tight. After another caution on lap 72 with McCaskill in 27th, Shiplett called for an air pressure, track bar and wedge adjustment to correct the tight condition.

When the race went green on lap 74, McCaskill was in the 25th position and climbed to the 20th position before another caution on lap 95. McCaskill reported that the Dodge Charger was getting better with all the adjustments and the car was turning better through the corner. Shiplett decided to not bring the car down pit road with the rest of the field for pit stops in order to gain track position, leaving McCaskill the leader. Leading the field to the green flag at the halfway point, McCaskill led a total of 5 laps and hung on to every position he could as faster cars with 30 laps fresher tires caught and passed him. Despite having older tires, McCaskill stayed in the top 10 where he settled into 8th before another caution on lap 132.

Shiplett brought McCaskill down pit road for minor trackbar adjustments, four tires and fuel, for what would be his last pit stop of the night. The No. 9 Dodge Charger restarted in 15th on lap 144, but a lap later, rear bumper contact from another driver caused McCaskill to spin and back into the wall causing damage to the left rear of the car. McCaskill went a lap down in the pits as Shiplett ordered his crew to make repairs to the rear of the Charger before sending the No. 9 onto the track.

On lap 155, the left rear tire blew causing McCaskill to hit the wall hard going in turn three. With only 40 laps left in the race the team didn’t have enough time to repair the car and get McCaskill back on the track before the end of the race and ended the night in 35th place. The No. 9 Evernham Motorsports Dodge now sits in seventh position in owner points.
