Chub Frank Follows Up Eldora Disappointment With Stirring World of Outlaws Late Model Series

Chub Frank Follows Up Eldora Disappointment With Stirring World of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory At Sharon & National Interstate Speedweek Title

Chub Frank is back on track. The superstar driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ made that abundantly clear by not only winning Saturday night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Buckeye 50’ at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, but also challenging for a victory the previous evening at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, and capturing the National Interstate Speedweek points title.

Chub’s strong performance in the National Interstate Speedweek activities came after he experienced the most miserable three-race stretch of his 2007 season from July 20-22 – a slump that dropped him from 10 to 68 points behind WoO LMS standings leader Steve Francis.

“We needed to get back to running well after last week,” said Chub, “and we did.”

After the scheduled opener of National Interstate Speedweek was rained out on Wednesday (July 25) at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park, Chub finished a quiet-but-steady seventh in Thursday night’s 40-lap feature at Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway. It was the first-ever appearance at the circular quarter-mile oval for both Chub and the WoO tour.

Chub traveled to Eldora Speedway on Friday night for the inaugural WoO LMS event at the famed half-mile oval and made a serious bid to win the ‘Subway 50.’ He came off the outside pole to lead laps 1-2, then chased Josh Richards before regaining command on lap 17. His hopes effectively ended on lap 40, however, when a tangle with NASCAR Nextel Cup star Tony Stewart, who was making a dirt Late Model appearance at the track he owns, sent both Chub and Stewart spinning into the outside wall on the homestretch.

While Chub managed to rally over the final 10 laps and finish seventh despite racing with a bent rear clip on his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*, he wasn’t happy about Stewart’s attempt to grab the lead with a slide-job.

“I figured that racers race half-clean, but what he did wasn’t even close,” Chub said of Stewart’s unsuccessful bid for the top spot. “He just drove it right up in there and came up across the track in front of me.

“He always bitches about everybody else running out of ‘talent,’ and I think he ran out of talent right there.

“I know he probably figured that was his only shot so he took it, but he probably shouldn’t have,” continued Chub. “The track was so fast because of the conditions (rain soaked the speedway and delayed the start of the program), so everything happened fast. You don’t have time to think about what’s going on in those conditions, so you just react. But sometimes you can’t see what’s going on and you can’t react, and that’s what happened (in the tangle with Stewart).”

After repairing the car he drove at Eldora, Chub roared back on Saturday night by piloting the same machine to victory in the ‘Buckeye 50’ at Sharon. With many family members and friends looking on, Chub found a good line around the rough, rain-soaked three-eighths-mile oval in the closing laps to pull off a dramatic victory.

Chub went from fourth to first in a four-lap span, completing the late-race charge by passing Jeremy Miller for the lead on lap 45. He beat Donnie Moran and Miller to the finish line to pocket $10,225 for his series-best fifth victory of the season.

The triumph clinched Chub the championship of the first National Interstate Speedweek, which was worth another $1,125. He also made up some points in the WoO LMS battle; he remained third in the standings, but now trails leader Francis by 44 points and second-place Clint Smith by only eight markers.

“We lost a bunch (of points) last week, and when you lose that many it’s hard to make ‘em up,” said Chub. “At least we’re inching our way back up in the points.”

With the WoO LMS now off until the ‘Scorcher 100’ on Aug. 21-23 at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn., Chub and his crew will have some time in the shop to prepare for the homestretch of the season. He doesn’t plan to race this weekend due to family obligations, but he expects to compete in the $50,000-to-win North-South 100 on Aug. 10-11 at Florence Speedway in Union, Ky., and possibly the following week’s big-money Topless 100 at Batesville (Ark.) Speedway as well.
