100-lap Late Model race tops Saturday's 5-race slate Wednesday, July 25, 2007

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Could this be the week that the Dodges fall and the $1,300 bounty is claimed?
After seeing Paul DeBolt’s Ford, then Nick Smith’s Chevy, at the head of the field for the first 53 laps of last Saturday’s Late Model 75, the “anything-but-a-Mopar” crowd is champing at the bit in anticipation of this weekend’s 100-lapper.
That 100-lap feature, for the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models, tops a five-race bill as Langley Speedway continues its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign on Saturday, July 28, with Law Enforcement Night presented by Hampton Chevrolet and the (Newport News, Va) Daily Press.
In addition to the big Late Model race, Saturday’s feature lineup includes: Dunkum’s Machine Shop/Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks (40 laps); Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, the Pro 6 Series (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. and practice rounds get under way at 2. After the 4:15 drivers meeting, time trials begin at 4:30. Pre-race festivities, including a parade lap featuring vehicles from almost 20 local police departments and other law enforcement agencies, commence at 6:45. Hampton Chevrolet and the Virginia Rat Pack Corvette Club will also get a moment in the spotlight during the pre-race program. The first feature race gets the green flag at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
For Saturday’s event, law enforcement officers will be admitted free of charge upon presentation of their department-issued ID cards. Also, the officers’ adult guests will receive a $2 discount on their tickets.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session on Thursday, July 26. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

The Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesday” schedule continues on August 1 with drivers chasing a share of the $2,500 points fund. The program includes “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford retained the top spot in this week’s NASCAR Virginia state championship standings, leading Langley regulars Greg and Danny Edwards. His margin has narrowed, though.
With 512 points, Morris, the defending national champ, is 22 ahead of Greg Edwards. Danny Edwards, who has 14 races under his belt vs. 15 for Morris and Greg Edwards, is 30 points behind his brother, 490-460.
Drivers can score points toward the state title by competing at any NASCAR track in Virginia — Langley, Motor Mile, South Boston or Old Dominion. Each driver’s 18 best finishes, based on the number of points received for each event, will be considered to determine the championship.
Langley veterans Mark Wertz and Shawn Balluzzo are also included in this week’s statewide top 10. Wertz moved up a spot to fifth, while Balluzzo jumped two positions to eighth.

In the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship chase, Woody Pitkat of Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn., has leapfrogged Guy Jubinville of Autodrome St. Eustache in St. Eustache, Quebec, Canada, to take over the top spot.
Local drivers in the national top 500 include: Greg Edwards (41st), Danny Edwards (55th), Mark Wertz (74th), Shawn Balluzzo (104th), Jeff Shiflett (136th), Anthony Warren (275th), Dean Shiflett (289th), Jeff Sampson (300th), Craig Eastep (375th) and Ross Clements (474th).

With a fledgling NASCAR Busch East series program and Late Model and Champ Kart rides, Casey Wyatt is already a busy boy. And, his plate got a little fuller with this week’s announcement that he’ll be wheeling an INEX Legend for car owner Dee Causey for the remainder of the ‘07 season. Wyatt made his debut with the team a couple weeks ago, subbing for Rette Causey, and came home with a fifth-place finish.
• • •
Mark Wertz has picked up victories in the last two Late Model races, so, by track rules, he can start this week’s feature from no better than the outside of Row 4. He will, however, have those 25 extra laps to overcome the less-than-ideal starting spot.

NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, August 4, with Toyota Night at the Races. That evening’s six-race feature lineup includes: Late Models, Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets, Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks, Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts and the Pro 6 Series’ final Langley appearance of the season.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
To learn more about Langley Speedway and its 2007 schedule of events, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or consult the track’s Web site — www.langley-speedway.com.
