Lucama, NC --
“Finally.” That is all Benson’s Drew Herring could say after taking his first checkered flag of the 2007 Southern National Raceway Park season. Though the team has been consistent, racking up 7 top fives prior to Saturday night, a trip to victory lane has been tough to capture. Saturday, things would change.
In the first of two Kinston Automotive Late Model events, Jamey Caudill led from wire to wire to win his fourth race of the season. “We needed a good run there, and worked hard this week to get this thing turned around” said Caudill of his win. Kirk Leone took second early in the race, and despite his best efforts he’d have to settle for second and his second top five of the year. Drew Herring finished third, Scott Wise fourth and Corey Strickland fifth.
Herring would take the pole thanks to a three car invert from the first race, and never look back. It seemed as if Caudill would take over early, as he charged from third and had the bumper of Herring’s car covered. Midway through the race, however, Caudill’s Monte Carlo started to fall off, and he’d have to settle for seventh. Behind Herring, Curtis Truex Jr. made a late pass on JR Motorsports teammate Scott Young for second, with Young finishing third, Leone fourth and Strickland fifth.
“We had a great race the first race of the season, then things went downhill. We got back going, then they paved the track and we started at zero. We get something going again, and the tire changes. It’s great to get back here and hopefully this will give us something for the rest of the season” said Herring of his win.
Herrings first and third, combined with an early wreck for points leader Deac McCaskill puts Herring within 32 points of first place in the Kinston Automotive Late Model division. Caudill is third, with teammates Truex Jr. and Young rounding out the top five.
In Limited Late Models, it seemed as if the tide was turning and points leader Lance West was going to have a rough night. Donald Brace backed up his first pole with what looked to be a sure victory, but on lap 38 he fell victim to mechanical troubles. While trying to get around Brace, PJ Flowers and Doug Barefoot touched and spun on lap 39, bringing out the caution and moving both to the back of the field. This put Brandon Hobbs to the front, but only for six laps, as West made a slight bump and run to take the lead with five laps to go, hanging on for his seventh win of the season. Hobbs would finish second, with Daniel Watkins III, Gary Davis and Tom Holland rounding out the top five.
Kevin Benton not only won the Street Stock race from the pole Saturday night, but also wrangled the points lead away from Greg Barnette for the first time all season. Stacey Pate and Barnette would finish second and third. Benton’s win, combined with a third place finish for Barnette, gives Benton an 18 point lead on now second place Barnette.
In 4 Cylinders, Lee Kozikowski would take his third victory of the season after pole-sitter Greg Whitley’s car broke down on lap 8. Kozikowski would then have to hold off a hard-charging Kevin Pierce for the victory, with Pierce finishing a mere .15 seconds behind him. Ed Little would finish third for his first top three of the season. Billy Gomez held off Brad Arthur to win the INEX Legends event, with Wayne Boone winning his first UCAR race of the year, holding off Jimmy Jones Jr., who would take second.
This Saturday the USAR Hooters Pro Cup touring series rolls into town for the Naturally Fresh 250, with a 50 lap support race by the Allison Legacy Series.
